Update- took the car to see my cousin Boris at Dot Transmission. Ron, the shop foreman, took it for a spin and thought the problem was due (ahem) more to the the driver than the hardware.
That's good for sure, so I have been watching my RPM closer, shifting at a more agressive RPM and finding the shifter moves into gear "butter smooth" when I shift at the correct RPM.
I am a bit surprised by this since i thought the synchros would kind of take care of the overlap, allowing a smooth-feeling shift even if the RPM's were a bit under.
Ron said if he drove the car for a week he could get the car to shift easily. I guess I just need more practice.
