hey guys, recently purchased a 2010 grand sport with dry sump and brought in to Gm for an oil change. I know there's 2 oil drain plugs but I noticed the service tech was putting oil in 2 separate tanks, one where the oil fill cap is and another near the middle of the engine. Is this normal? Everything I read said it takes 10l directly into the oil tank, never read about it going into a separate reservoir. Unmarked black cap is where he also filled

Only thing I can think of is the mechanic was doing this so oil would be in the pan, so there would be a supply at start up for the pump. Did you ask him why he did it?

He said so there would be even levels of oil when it first starts up. Just making sure putting oil in both won't harm it? Dip stick showed it was proper level and psi is around 55 during cruise and 70 during higher rpm

Dry sump should never add oil to the engine oil cap. In fact, on the Z and ZR1, the cap has tabs preventing removal but can be forced off...... Oil,goes in the tank, period.... Wouldn't be going back there for oil change.

Will this damage it or is it just safe practice not to add it there? Surprised because it was done by gm mechanics

Not sure......but the engine normally would store very little oil. I have heard if the remove the cap there are two tabs that break off and can stay in the engine. Not surprises it was done by a GM mechanic.....lots of heir Lube techs have no clue how to do the dry sump. Google it, you will find endless horror stories of dealers messing up oil changes.... If it was me, I would,op that valve cover off to look for the tabs....cheers

This does not sound like good news. You would think there would have been at least some training and if not questions asked about the procedure. Hope this is not the case with your motor.

Where exactly would the tabs be? Do I need to take off the cap to see them?

Upon researching further, it looks like the ls7 valve caps have prongs, but does anyone know if the ls3 dry sump valve cap has the prongs too or is it a twist off?
