I've always wondered about that. I recently sold 2 cars on Kijiji. Both of my Camaros. Both drove off with the signed transfer of ownership papers and I got a signed bill of sale. You'd think there'd be a way of checking if the ownership was transferred. I imagine one could pay for a carfax. Actually I think you can check on servicing done on cars at the DMV, but what else does it tell us.Had no idea about this. Could result in an expensive nasty surprise.....
I may just do that having just sold my 64 Bonneville about a month ago. Signed the registration transfer, pulled off the plate , got paid with a certified check and canceled the insurance but haven't seen it on the road yet. Not sure what the regulations are here regarding this but worth looking into , just incase.Found my answer
Yes, you can find out if car ownership has been transferred by obtaining an uncertified vehicle record from your local vehicle registration office, such as ServiceOntario. For a private sale, the buyer and seller must complete and sign the vehicle portion of the owner's permit and the Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) for the transfer to be completed at the registration office.
I wonder what one could do if the ownership has NOT been transferred.I may just do that having just sold my 64 Bonneville about a month ago. No idea but there does seem to be something wrong with this picture. Anything happened like the vehicle causing an accident or property damage you would no doubt come out on top if it ever went to court for example but dealing with the heartless vicious nasty insurance company might be a different story.I wonder what one could do if the ownership has NOT been transferred.
Funny, that article (when I read it) was sponsored by my insurance company. loldealing with the heartless vicious nasty insurance company might be a different story.
I'd suggest going to your local vehicle registration office and let them know you sold the vehicle and get them to cancel you off the vehicles SIN#. Yes. I read that Fred, but Maritimers have always been the brains of the country. For once we are ahead of the rest of the country. Sellers here have to notify motor registration about the sale and then we are no longer responsible. Such a simple idea.
