Grill inserts of some sort is prudent and if tracking the car they should be removable.

What would you recommend for the hole size in the grill insert if I were to make my own- 3x6mm or 6x12mm?
YMMV. I bought plastic chicken wire which still allows small pebbles through. Too small and you will choke the rads. <shrug> I picked what I was comfortable with.
If you left the mesh off, you could BBQ the chickens that get through to the rad. Great for a long road trip.
