John Cordts’ 1965 Corvette Convertible race car was a Canadian‑based big‑block “race off the showroom floor” Corvette entered in the 1965 Canadian Championship for big‑bore sports cars, sponsored by Gorries Chevrolet.
Who built and sponsored it
The car was a 1965 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible, prepped and raced in Canada by John Cordts with support from Gorries Chevrolet (a dealership‑sponsored effort).
It was used to win the 1965 Canadian Championship for big‑bore sports cars, which helped solidify Cordts’ reputation and led to his later association with Dave Billes’ Performance Engineering.
Mechanical specs (as a race car)
The Corvette was powered by a full‑race 396‑cubic‑inch big‑block V8, reportedly tuned to around 425 hp, with additional race hardware such as heavy‑duty suspension, brakes, and safety components.
It is often described as a “full race” big‑block red convertible, raced in Canadian events such as Mosport and Mont‑Tremblant in 1965.
VIN and current status
Enthusiasts and registries are actively trying to track down the original VIN of this specific 1965 Corvette, since it is considered a historically significant Canadian‑raced Corvette with a documented championship season.
The car’s trail leads to owners in the Montreal area, but as of 2026 there is still debate and ongoing research about its exact VIN and current whereabouts.
Any idea which dealership sold the vehicle ? Although I'm sure many have already thought of this .
