Engine modifications and the law in Ontario

I doubt very many in government are "car people". Most 30 something "professionals" these days regard cars as appliances. The support for the hobby really isn't there at the political level; it's just us die hards that seem to care. It's too bad as a lot of money is raised locally for hospitals around here. I understand the need to control emissions in the province; but go after the big fish first. My car is kept in perfect condition in regards to its brakes, steering, tires, lights, etc. Unfortunatley, it pollutes more than it should.

Assuming that you keep it in a reasonable state of tune, you have nothing to apologize for. When your car was sold new, it met the applicable emissions standards in effect at the time. Governments, by their regulations, sanctioned those emissions, collected sales tax on the purchase, and have been pleased to take your annual licence fees and all that gas tax you've paid at the pumps over the years.

When the car was sold new, there was no contract that it only be driven for a set number of years. There was no requirement for it to be abandoned when emissions technology improved. Drive that puppy into the ground. When they start taxing all the hot air out of politicians' mouths, maybe we'll have something to think about.

You have nothing to apologize for.

As we don't have them here, can someone explain historic plates? Are those the same as antique plates?

This shows just how well our Country and government must be doing. When they are down to worrying about smog equipment on the relatively few 30+ year old vehicles that are left and that hardly put on many miles a year, they must not have much to worry about. So to validate their work they just keep going down the list of what to focus on what's next. Unfortunately, it's the car hobby, fortunately it sounds like the recession must be over!

I look at simple numbers. The U.S. has ten times our population. China and India EACH have 3-4 times the American population. They could care less about the environment. Our population is such a tiny part of the equation as to not matter no matter what we do regarding the environment....if indeed man really is the problem in the first place. Environmentalists talk of 2-3 miles of ice lost off one side of Antarctica but apparently about 5 miles has grown on the other side. There may be a problem, but I don't think we are getting all the facts as they really are. There is an old saying that goes something like this, "A pessimist is just an educated optimist."

alot has to do with what i call " the cause of the month " mentality. the seal hunt, logging, acid rain, global waming [ scientists say we are just now coming out of the last ice age ], smoking in parks, cow farts and on and on. too much creedence is being given to the chicken littles of the world. our hobby is a target for these types in part because of our relatively small numbers. any suggestion of easing up is met with the attitude of " you're lucky it's not outlawed entirely ".
