That would be very expensive should you need to replace the pump.

Seems to be a variance in what is bought for the repair. Would that be because the installer doesn't want to dismantle the mechanism to get to the rheostat and just replaces everything?

I don't think so, the big job is to lower the thank (worst when it's full) then replace the rheostat is the easy part. On some models, you just cant buy separately. You buy the complete gage unit including the pump support or the complete gage unit including pump support AND the pump. I have seen this particularly on models where manufacturers had made an update on the product and replacement part will not fit on the older models.
