Ballad of the Water Cruise!

At 10 pm, the night before, the mighty weatherman, armed with his computers, sensing stations, and satellite data, declared not one drop of rain would befall the people the next day. Corvette Elves jumped for joy as they realized they were 100% guaranteed a beoootiful day for the first ever, Crown Vettes Save the Wave Record Cruise. The weatherman had decreed a 0% chance of rain for each and every hour of Sunday. Not a 1% or 5% call….but a ZERO% decree. It does not get any better than that my friends!

The Elves slept peacefully as they dreamed of the big cruise the next day, with Corvettes coming from afar.

But alas, come morning, there appeared a dark cloud in the sky and some rumbling sounds from afar? This could not be? The plans were set! A quick check of the weatherman’s work, showed he had reneged again! While Elves slept, he erased his work and placed there unto new numbers! Bad numbers! Very, very bad numbers! Numbers that caused Elves to wince and groan! He was now calling for heavy rain and it was to start at 10:30 am just as the worker Elves were to arrive on location and set up their greeting posts for the travelling Corvetters.

And rain it did! The sky was angry that morning my friend! She unleashed torrents of rain, cats and dawgs, couches and chairs! The sky opened and mighty thunder cracked as the worker Elves ran for cover. Lightening was everywhere. Rivers of water streamed down the roadway. Rain drops hurt the forehead, and shoes filled with water. A sunny day? It was not to be!

But surely a storm of this degree would move through and be done quickly? There was still an hour before the herd of Corvettes would exercise their ponies. Nay…it was not to be. Mother nature hath control, and her fury be not challenged. She rained down upon us for hours. And the quest for a Corvette record was foiled.

Lest this be a lesson to all yee! A weather forecaster is the only job where you can be dead wrong half of the time and still get paid!

Okay, all kidding aside. We got hammered with rain! Ham-mered! Capital “HAM”! It started 15 minutes before our set up, continued while trying to stage cars, and rained for the full hour of the actual cruise. We arrived at our end destination, pulled into the parking lot, and low and behold the sun came out. The two hours of rain nailed us directly on the two hour event.

With all that said, we still had 146 Corvettes show up – we are a hardy bunch after all! One good man was so hardy, he did not bring his T-tops! In retrospect – not a good plan! And even though it was bad, we had several C2’s out (one being a ’63 split window!). We had C3’s, 4’s, 5’s, 6’s and 7’s. Oh, and yes, we had four C8’s. Highway 402 was awash with rooster tail spray making it impossible to stay tight together. If folks had a “Weather” setting on their car, they were pushing on that knob with white knuckles. And as bad as it got, we still got drone video from two different overpasses and photos and video from the ground (our helpers on overpasses were a wee bit worried about the lightening!).

I mentioned we were a hardy bunch, but did I mention we were a generous bunch too? We raised $1,150 in donations for our charity, War Amps. Thank you, you big generous, water-logged Corvetters!

And now the cleaning begins…getting the highway grime off all the little bits. And for other Elves, we are working our way through the drone footage, video and stills, aiming to get this content up onto our website in a reasonable fashion. No one crashed. No one got struck by lightening, and no one got hurt (except feelings). All things considered, I am calling that a huge success. Did we break the Ontario record…nope! Some suggest we declare ourselves "the largest Corvette cruise in Ontario since 2003". Others suggest we declare ourselves "the largest water logged Corvette cruise in Ontario"! Well…if the shoe fits...well, you know the rest! There is always next year!

On Behalf of Corvettes of Western Ontario, our Elves, and War Amps, thank you for your support on this very difficult day! Now go clean your cars – it’s embarrassing to the brand! Sheesh!
If ya came out...THANK YOU!!!!!

Stay Safe.
