Reading Eric Larson's book on Churchill in the time frame from the beginning of the WW2 to Pearl Harbour. The British knew how many fighters they had built. According to the book they never were able to find actual planes, accounts of lost planes and wrecked ones that related to built ones. They even hired someone to just count, never found them all.
