I thought you can switch them on manually.

You can on US models. In order to pass inspection they must be always on like all canadian cars. Apparently this can be done by the dealer via software update....just found out. Thanks.

If anyone else has anything else to add, please do!

I found that out when I brought a car from the US 7 years ago...Can Tire has the exclusive rights to certify that an imported vehicle meets Canadian standards. No road testing required.
