Hi guys, I’ve been researching and reading a lot about switching to a 3.42 gear and mew stall converter, maybe 2400-2800 rpm. Can anyone comment if this is a good investment? Feel free to make suggestions or pros and cons.

I have an ‘02 auto. Also, where would you recommend for ordering these parts in Canada? What would approximate costs be? And what brands would you suggest for the TC?

Thanks so much!

I have 3.42 gears in my 2001 right now, and I'm switching them out for 4.10 gears. they will be for sale come spring if interested. complete in carrier...

I had just changed out my 273, s for 342, s, what a difference. Now my 4th gear is slipping intermittently, so am going to put a rebuilt tranny in her with a shift kit. Also wondering what the best stall speed torque convertor I should go with. Its basically stock, with just add Ons. Borla exhaust, breather.

Hi Silver, I did the same rear end change to my '95 Z28 and I had a built A4 with a shift kit. I used to have to put the car in neutral at a stop light. I was recommended a 3200 stall torque converter. The stock torque converter was dragging and putting strain on the whole driveline. When you change out your torque converter, be prepared, your face will hurt from the grin during your first drive.

You would be well advised to speak with a racing transmission specialist. Giving “him” the numbers, such as horsepower, gear ratios, of the transmission type and differential, motor redline, weight of the car, cam specs such as duration & lift are critical, and importantly, what style of driving do you expect to be using the car for. I have built many quick cars and would recommend you simply call a pro. Whatever you do, DO NOT over estimate/overstate any questions (such as above) he might ask or you will be very dissapointed.with the results. To be honest, there may be a very limited improvement and value for your dollar to go for a custom-made torque converter with a small block Chevy without serious other modifications. If you are drag racing, there likely would be some improvement in trap times IF you add other enhancements, such as long tube headers, performance recalibration, improved throttle body, exhaust system, gear changes, air mass sensor, and on & on.
