So starting to rethink my interest in the 1000 hp C5.

I have a high hp car, do I need another?

Considering now:
1)2004 C5 convertable, stock, automatic, 100 K km, asking price 25K
2)2005 C6 convertable, stock, manual, 60 K km, asking price 30K
and dare I add this
3)2009 370Z, hardtop, stock, manual 12 K km, asking price 22- 26K (depends on his previous ads, it moves around).

I'm sort of curious to try a convertible experience. Wondering about the final year of C5 vs. first year of C6 production. But C6 vs. C5, 40 K km less and just 5K higher asking price tempts me.

And sad to say, I've always had a soft spot for Z's since my 280ZX. And at 12K km it ought to roll for the rest of my life, maybe be a good car for Aidan to learn to drive on??

Any Monday morning advice? These three are also all Alberta cars so no need to fly to Ontario. Although the trip there to see everyone again and the trip
back would be a great part of the experience.

And yes, sigh, I'll admit that even an S2000 has been tempting me too...............

I need to just go and buy another combine to empty my bank account!

Cheers,

Garry

I'm assuming they're all yellow?

Also, those prices are all the same as that 1000 hp C5. If you get something stock, it just might seem too slow. :D

And, as you already have a C6, I would suggest to lean towards the C5. That way, you get to test multiple generations.

The 370Z is a nice car.

Basically, no matter which way you go, I'm sure you can't lose.

Good morning Riley,

Yes, all yellow. I have to be true to at least one thing!

You know, it is a good thing that I do sort of live in a more remote location, otherwise I hate to think what be sitting in the driveway right now.

I think that I might be looking more for something to take on the odd road trip. But then again I have to admit that I am tore with a two seater again. Something that could take Aidan and my gf at the same time might be a consideration too. Just not sure how many rear seat cars float my boat.

Then again living in a remote location also gives me more time to work through these desires without necessarily buying any of them rashly.

The C5 did attract my eye at first and it was only the later C6 posting that gave me pause.

But I do like the next to nothing for km's of the 370Z. Not that 60 or even 100 K km's is worn out.

Still the experience of the roof down might be nice. I always liked the t-roofs on the 280ZX...................

Cheers,

Garry

Hmmmm. Tough question.....
Going to Ponoka this year was different than the rest as this is the first year I could not take my wife with me to Alberta as someone has to take care of Oakley. So, it's tough to have a two seater and what to do road trips and events when you have to leave your family at home.

Good morning Riley,

No doubt not practical cars for three people. Who gets left behind? So much of the fun of road trips are the conversations you have together. While Aidan is still young some sports cars with rear seats could still be practical as he would have it to himself (or my gf). But maybe I also have to think hard about the number of pure travelling road trips I've done in my recent life (outside of Ponoka none!) and as there are only 7 more years with Aidan maybe this is less of an issue than I am thinking.

I think about the difference between the C5 and C6, $5K in price but a manual and 40 K km less.....................

I'm not sure if it being the last of the C5's and first of the C6's should be a factor................

Drat my grain contracts were not picked up either!

Cheers,

Garry

Geeze Louise.

Just came back from my parents' place. Parked the truck, looked up and a flipping black bear is on my patio deck! Never seen on this close in the 5 years since I moved home. I road with good traffic, living across from my uncle's place and there is traffic there all the time as well. No garbage left outside either.

So the bear moved a few feet (closer to the Z06!) then stood on his hind legs and looked at me then ran around the west side of the house.

I waited a few minutes, honked my horn, yelled and then ran for the door, key prepped. Yep, just call me coward!

Inside the house, to my dresser and fished out my bear pepper spray. Called Fish and Wildlife, they don't think I'll see him again. Sort of unnerving as I go walking every morning..................

So I emailed some questions to the guy with the C6 convertible to calm myself down.................thinking the manual , C6 and 60 K km's might be a better bet..............

Called my gf, she just laughed at me for being such a sissy.

Cheers,

Garry

So the owner did answer my questions, he was sort of reluctant which I found odd. So:

"
This reads like you a doubter,,,

LS2 engine - air intake and exhaust system upgraded. Shaw GMC claimed 500hsp, I did not check it out, as Im not spending 350.00 to a high performance sports shop to have it checked out. It comes with a 400hsp as stock,, it definitely was upgraded.

Im second owner, bought from Shaw GM, original owner did up grades including colour on leather and interior.
No liens, no accidents, Im buying a BMW6 Convertible - M-series, that should answer all your doubts,, maybe and was from Lethbridge.

You should come and see it if your that much in doubt!"

So I can't believe that an air intake and exhaust resulted in a 25% hp gain. I seem to remember that the Vararam for the LS 7 was something in the neighbourhood of 26 hp and I wouldn't expect much more for an exhaust to be honest. So maybe 450 hp. I'd have thought it would have been retuned as well but no mention of that.

It is not that I am in doubt but just want to have as clear a picture of what I might be considering purchasing. Just trying to be prudent...........

So I asked him a few more questions and we'll see if he answers.

Cheers,

Garry

You most definitely WILL NOT gain 100hp at the crank with just cold air intake and exhaust...not even close. Run away my friend...lol.

I agree. No chance of 100hp from intake and exhaust. Having said that owner appears to be honest and admits it's not something he's verified. I hazard a guess that most owners who don't frequent forums or do their research fall for the marketing and simply add up the marketing drivel numbers and say their cars are at 850hp with a light weight flywheel, an electric ebay supercharger and wheels painted in a lighter colour. :) That's never the case but it also doesn't mean the car's a POS either.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thinks that the estimated hp boost was a bit high. But then again I was still interested in the car if it had been stock. It was never advertised as having a CAI or exhaust mods, just something the owner revealed to me when I asked. So any sort of mild bolt on bump in hp is probably appealing to me - I wouldn't have to have that done myself now! No doubt 30 to 50 hp gain would be quite a step forward over stock.

Still no reply to last night's questions. I can appreciate that the poster probably gets tired of answering questions and I'm sure I'd be better off to phone him but I have a poor memory so it is easier to refer to an email to my questions' answers for me.

Cheers,

Garry

I'd buy a gun but given that I really couldn't hit the broad side of a barn the Z06 would be at more risk than the bear would be!!

I know it will pass but I did go walking with my bear spray this morning - nerves? I met my cousin who lives 700 south of me and told him. He's had bears in his yard before but he has outside garbage barrels and saskatoon bushes - I have neither.

You might be right, 30 hp might be closer for those mods.

He still hasn't replied yet. I really hate sellers who do that and it has caused me to walk away more than once. If you're not prepared to answer questions or to have more than 3 sentences describing something like a car you have for sale (thus don't be surprised if people reply to the ad with quesitons) then don't post it. Can't imagine people just walk up and drop $30K no questions asked these days.................

Wow, on my way home I met an RCMP car, he didn't hit his lights but motioned with his hand for me to reduce my speed, 115 km on a 100 km highway, a bit much I thought.............

I totally agree. I am in the same boat as you...I like to email and ask a few questions as well so I can refer back etc. Just the way I am. Trying to find a solid paint top for my car and finally found one online so I emailed him about it. A week and a half later he finally got back to me...and didn't answer most of my questions. Frustrated...I broke down and called and asked a few questions...he couldn't answer much because top was at his workplace and wasn't in front of him. Now...another week later...no return call from him yet. So frustrating.

As for the mountie, if it's a slow day 15 over definitely could get you a wave or a light flash haha. Especially if there isn't a big road (aka 4 lane) near you to catch the high flyers...30 or 40 over and higher lol.
If I were to profile the seller of the car you are looking at I picture a younger guy with his hat on sideways, white sunglasses and a "thug life" T shirt lol...but I could be way off. Hope you get answers soon or find what you are looking for!

I had a look for some of the tuning results for my old Camaro but no luck. I do remember that CAI, MAF screen delete and an exhaust upgrade to 3" a pipe still netted me less than 40hp. So the seller doesn't know a lot about upgrades. To me it sounds like someone whose only interest is in how attention the car brings to him. He might be the nicest kind of guy an the car could be fantastic. But then again it could very well be just the opposite. Hard to say. A phone call followed up by an email might just be your best option.

The problem for me is geography. If I lived within a few hours no big deal. Or if it was a place I go to for business or pleasure easy to see. But for it is 8 hours away (not sure if the seller knows this either) so I have to try to get as much information as I can before making the trip. As the trip will be strictly to see this car, I need to be pretty darn sure this is what I am looking for and there will be no surprises. Now of course my gf would be happy to see her daughter if I were to drive there, but the other plan would be to fly there and drive the car back as I did when I bought the Z06. In that case the salesman and I had basically closed the deal, agreed on a price that I found satisfactory and so i was confident to proceed.

I also sort of wonder, given that the car has been listed for a month and has not sold and that 1/6th of the driving season for non-pickup trucks has ended, that he is not more motivated.

Now of course he could be busy as well but as of this morning no reply still. Even if it was to say "lets talk on the phone instead of by emails" I would have more respect and interest.

Out of curiosity I did Google the guy and of all things it appears that he works for a agro supplier and grain buying company too - how is that for funny?!

True too as he never did any of the mods himself that he just simply liked the car and that is fine, I don't expect him to be fully aware of everything that was done. It was enough that he knew what had been modded (I hope!) to let prospective buyers know.

Maybe I'm patient enough to give him another day. The car does look like it was well cared for by both owners, certainly the original owner must have been more into his car to have added some bolt-on's and some cosmetics, this owner just appeared to have enjoyed them without going any further.

As for my RCMP officer, yes, I was over the legal limit but given the tendency of people to exceed that as it is, I didn't think that +15 was excessive. +20 or more then yes I would deserve a ticket. But if they ticketed everyone going +15 they would never get far down the road!!! I also have to see if I can find out why my detector never warned me as well...........

Cheers,

Garry

I would suggest to keep looking Garry. The guy sounds like a turd and what is the deal with calling you a doubter? Right there I would just end the conversation if the seller is going to be insulting or try to use dumb tactics to get you to look at the car. I'm betting if you go see it, he'll tell you to "step up to the plate and buy the car" or that "if you can't afford the car, maybe you shouldn't be looking at it" to try an goat you into buying.
At the risk of insulting forum members, this guy sounds like he'll fit right in with the BMW crowd..... :p

15 over isn't excessive lol. Like I said...slow day probably. At least he didn't really even bother with you. Why your detector didn't work...assuming it was working properly...he might have got an instant on instant off reading on you before the detector even was within range. Or...got you on laser if he was stopped at all...or...there was an aircraft above you...or...he went strictly off a visual estimation...and yada yada hahahaha. You just look fast maybe lol.
