In 1883, prospectors discovered a rich vein of colemanite borax in the Calico Mountains. Pacific Coast Borax Company was formed, and a narrow-gauge railroad was built between Borate and Daggett. By 1904, the ore quality was declining, and operations ceased. The locomotives and rolling stock were abandoned until 1913, when they were used to build the Death Valley Railroad.
