Alberta. Referendum for the province to Separate from Canada.

This is about Alberta (my home province) and not specifically about Trump but does involve the US.
We are currently in the midst of a call for referendum by the Alberta Prosperity Project organizers for Alberta to separate from Canada. To be clear, I do not support separating but there is certainly a segment of the population that does (reportedly +/- 20 -25%).

Separatist informational meetings are being held all over the province and appear to be getting large numbers in attendance from both supporters of separating and non-supporters who are just there to observe.
Anyway... There was one such meeting last week in central Alberta. I did not attend and have no intention of attending them but I know some people who were curious and did.
Questions were asked of the meeting chairs and one such question and answer deserves posting for anyone here that may be interested. The question as follows basically was:
If you are successful in securing a majority in the referendum, what is your plan for police in Alberta as there will be a significant portion of the population that will not approve or support separation, and demonstrations will likely be many?
The answer given was: If successful, we intend to enlist the US Military to police the province....

Tell me that wouldn't scare the a$$ of any rational Canadian. I am 99.999% certain the referendum to separate will not be successful but that alone is a look at the mentality (or lack thereof) that some of ours, and Canada's population has.

Treasonous fools . This was never going to fly in the first place but they are obviously now encouraged by the talk of a " 51 State " and think they can attract support from the American Administration because of , well of course, the oil reserves. Which in my opinion belong to all Canadians. It's a nothing burger, but I would bet many in the movement are benefiting in some fashion financially perhaps through fund raising and donations and likely from a variety of sources south of the border that would benefit from this being successful. Just look at the tens of millions in " support " given to tree hugging protesters from a variety of Americans sources in BC against any type of fossil fuel related infrastructure.
Recent poll numbers . A January 2026 Research Co. poll found that 31% of Albertans support independence and 62% are opposed, with 7% undecided. A December 2025 Pollara Strategic Insights survey reported that 19% would vote for separation in a referendum, while 75% would vote against it and 6% would not vote or were unsure. How to interpret this . Across these polls, the share opposed to Alberta leaving Canada is consistently in the 60–75% range. Differences in exact percentages reflect variations in question wording, polling firm, and timing, but all indicate a clear majority preferring to remain in Canada.

Separation movements in Canada are a lot like bowel movements - they never go away and are proffered by the constipated few. The separatists in Québec have been at it for close to a hundred years and were almost successful at one point. Lately, they are resurging and that will continue for another 100 years. Alberta is not really different from the perspective that a sizeable part of the population feel shortchanged by their place in the Canadian confederation. And, I must admit to be sympathetic due to the absolute abuse of Alberta during both of the Turdeau (not a typo) years in power. It is true that every province and territory has gripes with the feds due to the nature of our federation and the division of powers. I recall visiting my wife's family in BC in the early seventies and was shocked at the underlying dissatisfaction with confederation.

Alberta and Albertans deserve more respect from the federal government and the threat of separation may help achieve that as it did for Québec in the 70's and 80's. The people behind separation movements are mostly political neophytes as clearly demonstrated by the answer to the policing question.

As long as the governments are elected by population (representation by population) that likely won't change by a ton. I agree the system isn't perfect and some will always feel disrespected. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
It would be nice to see us all get along and share what we can and contribute our strengths.

I agree Murray. It always baffles me when separatist thinking goes off the rails. No country is perfect, no government is perfect. There is always room for improvement. Canada , if not the best, is one of the best places to live in the entire globe. Life doesn't get much better and I cannot understand why a large number of people want to waste their time trying to F!@# it up for the rest of us.
