A Sucker Punch From Your Neighbour/Friend?

 Unfortunately Trump will have the entire world in turmoil, and the majority of the American people are either as power hungry as he is or just plain idiots ( I tend to think the latter). And worse yet, there are a significant number of Canadians that think Trump and his dictator reign is great as well. Now he has threatened military action to take control of the Panama Canal as well as Greenland. If he isn't at war with another country very soon, I will be surprised. and you are right Dave. There is SFA we can actually do. This next 4 years will go down in history along with the lunatic and his supporters unless someone is a better shot than the last guy.
There is always the possibility and hope that his ability to do a number of things will be diminished after the midterms in two years. Then there are a number of legal challenges but the courts apparently usually side with the government when it comes to matters of national security which is the justification being used for these tariffs. Sad part is that this probably wouldn’t be happening we’re in not for poor marksmanship………

Feeling similar vrs Amazon (and everything else usa).
Although I didn't get suckered into their prime segment, I do (did) order a couple or three times a month from their website.
That stops now.
My conflict..........what to do with amzn stock that I've held for over a decade.
any Canadians I've talked to about Amazon are fine with them because they order from the Canadian amazon..... Duh....

I don't hold Amazon stock, and I'm not sure what I'd do in the case that I did - but I'd probably be considering a Bezos-dump, because if a movement takes hold and Canadians start ditching it, the value might just go down soon anyway, as soon as enough people do the same as I did.

JMHO.

Unfortunately for me it's not so easy to cut Amazon Prime. We have subscribe and save items once a month, Paramount plus subscription. While, yes profits go to Bezos most products I buy (other than grocery) are from China. So at least that money doesn't go too far Stateside. I will certainly look for "Canadian Made" products and hope retailers advertise such.

The Supreme court in the U.S. is owned by Trump.

You are right that it will be difficult for a lot of people to avoid doing business directly or indirectly with US owned companies due to the lack of alternatives in a lot of cases. But I think that most Canadians will do what they can to avoid this as much as possible. They say there is a silver lining to every cloud and in this case that may be the elimination of interprovincial trade barriers which are hare brained to begin with. Economists claim it costs us upwards of 200 Billion a year which is far greater than I would have guessed.

The other one, which is very controversial, but costs Canadians a great deal of money is supply chain management. Yes I know that the outcry from Quebec and Ontario would be loud but the fact of the matter is that I believe the intent when it was implemented was to protect the 40,000 independent dairy farmers in the country but now with consolidation that number is now about 10,000 . And the industry is controlled by a handful of large corporations who the farmers essentially work for. Seems kind of crazy that things like this occur as a result…..

In Canada, the dairy industry has faced significant challenges with milk wastage due to supply chain management and production quotas. A recent study indicates that between 6.8 billion and 10 billion litres of milk have been discarded since 2012, which is enough to feed approximately 11% of the Canadian population annually for over a decade. The estimated retail value of this wasted milk is around $6.7 billion.

Much like the Senate in Canada is unduly influenced by Trudope .
The Canadian senate is a lame duck unlike the U.S.
You can't blame the current government for our political system.

Edit: The U.S. judicial system is elected (in many states anyway) unlike the Canadian judicial system, but the supreme court in the U.S. is appointed by the president and are either democrats or republicans which of course since Trump lucked out (?) it is now a republican supreme court and will do what the republicans want.
I say "lucked out", but he may have forced the Democratic justices to resign.

Perhaps not but IMHO there are plenty of other things to blame them for. Having said that there are 105 seats in the Canadian Senate and ……

Justin Trudeau has appointed a total of 90 senators since becoming Prime Minister in 2015. He is expected to make additional appointments to fill 10 vacancies as of February 2, 2025, before his planned resignation in March. Most of his appointees are affiliated with the Independent Senators Group, although many have ties to the Liberal Party.

That leaves 5 that aren’t in some way beholden to his highness.

We just got a 30 day reprieve apparently.
Means nothing. He could totally retract the tariff threat but he has done irreparable damage to Canada/US relations. Future presidents may salvage relations and trade with Canada but the dirty threat will never be forgotten and will always be on the books as something they could do at any time. The path to dependence on our own supply, and trade with alternate counties is the path we should follow. JMO

See you in 29 days.

This appears to be some bizarre flex.... "Tell me what you can do for me" type of deal to make this go away. Would be curious to see what exactly was discussed. But damage is already there. 2 bluffs in one day.

Worse still maybe a deflection - take the focus away from other stuff being shoved through.

I hope that we will never forget this even if somehow (hopefull) we can advert this tariff this time. Sadly his followers will still be around to vote for another idiot to be their president.
Time for us to be less dependent on them. Build some safeguard in our economy to lessen the impact on future tradewars with the US. Build our pipelines to the West coast and sell our oil to other countries. I hope all provinces will improvise and build a strong
economy for all Canadians from coast to coast.
Somehow this morron will pull this stunt again and WILL threaten with an even higher tariff next time.
