6-71/8-71 history

That is scary!!!!!

So do many guys swap in a solid rear axle when going with big power?

there are packages available-moser,spicer,just rear ends. a ford 9" or dana 60 are probably the best choice. the most practical approach would be to back 1/2 the car. prepping a corvette for drag racing is pricey, and street friendliness is pretty well gone. i am keeping my 76 reasonably mild because i enjoy cruising it so much. my race car will be a different story however.:seeya: doug

drag racing with c3 i.r.s. is like tryin' ta shoot pool with a rope. but i think it would be nothing short of blasphemy to back half one. cars are just too cool to hack up.

I'm afraid I agree. If drag racing's your thing, there are plenty of cheaper ways to get into it and be more successful than a C3 Corvette.

But, if you're determined to race a C3, join a Corvette club, or a sportscar club, and get involved in slalom racing or road course track days. Start to really use that IRS, the almost perfect front-to-rear weight-ratio and the stopping power of those early 4-wheel disc brakes.

After what Zora went through with corporate management to finally get an IRS under the Stingray (and subsequent generations), it's almost blasphemous to think of ripping it all out just to put a straight axle under there for a few seconds blast down the 1/4.....or even worse down the 1/8th.

Where's the holy water smiley??? I'm feeling unclean. :D

I've stayed out of this one but I completely agree. Too many C3's have been shown so little repect over the years for all the engineering that went into them. I really hate to see them butchered up. But it is any owners perogative to do what they want I guess. It wouldn't be my choice.

" 67 " i salute you my friend. i still can't stop laughing- that is one of the funniest damn things i have seen in a long time. priceless !!! :seeya:

Wow, has this thread ever gone off track! Not a bad thing, there is defiantly some good info coming up. I was just curious on the evolution of the 6-71/8-71 from diesel two strokes to the gasoline performance world, and how the blower has been changed. The more I read and talk to people, the more I think about keeping it mild. Bigger engine output is starting to seem like a LOT more work (to everything else) than I thought. I really like that Dragvette 6 link rear suspension kit but that might be my limit.
Thanks again for all the feed back everyone!

Then, maybe it really didn't go off track at all. ;)

Sorry to go against the flow. That dragvette suspension set up looks pretty good and as stated, works for all types of driving, not just the strip. My suggestion is to do what you want with it. Put a blower in your car, run the strip. Then, remove the blower and do some autocross if you want to do other types of driving later. As long as you have all the safety gear you should be able to change it to suit your needs. It appears that suspension will work for any type of driving.
