1st to 2nd shift.

I installed the skip shift eliminator today and went for a little run to check it out...all is perfect ... it didnt eliminate the shift light but that doesn't bother me in the least :Woohoo:

I think there is a deeper problem with the manual 7 on some cars. My Vette came off the lot with 450 kms on the clock - dealer BS'd that it was driven from Toronto but I later discovered it was delivered to my Ottawa area dealer direct from Bowling Green. The 1-2 shift has been stiff or impossible since new. When cold, like yesterday +6, it is impossible to get it into 2nd gear and I never shift below 3000-3500 rpm even when cold. I have to do a 1-3 shift when the engine/tranny are cold. When warm, the shift to 2nd is difficult about 50% of attempts and most often clunks going into second.

So now the rest of the story. I was at Spring Mountain last week and drove 2 manual Stingrays just like mine. Beautiful smooth 1-2 shifts every time. By the time we get to drive the car each day it is already mostly warmed up so I asked one of the instructors about difficult 1-2 shifts when cold. He had never encountered it other than occasionally being forced into the skip shift to 4th when moving about the parking areas of the Spring Mountain facility. When walking by a garage on day 2, I stopped in and asked one of the mechanics about any knowledge of stiff 1-2 shifting. He was adamant that it should not happen. However he did say that if the transmission was attempted to be forced into second when a skip shift was initiated, there is a high possibility of damaging the transmission. It was his opinion that it damages the syncromesh bits in the tranny.

I will try to push this with the dealer but am not hopeful. I will order and install the ship-shift override to eliminate that possibility.

Would like to hear more stories of the difficult 1-2 shifting.

3 Z06s with the skip shift manuals and never had this problem. (1 6 speed and 2 7 speeds) I strongly suggest your car was damaged before you got it. Your car should easily slip into 2nd after you go past the minimum RPM to surpass the system.
Push hard with GM and you will hopefully get this transmission replaced.
It is clearly written that forcing the car into 2nd gear with the skip shift engaged will damage your transmission. Somebody messed up your transmission before you ever drove the car. This is one of the most frustrating things with owning such a specialized car. Untrained people operating it before you even get to sit in it. Pathetic actually and your dealership needs to be held accountable if not GM itself.
Don’t back down. You’re getting screwed otherwise.

Definitely push your dealer on this one. At the very least, and even if it wasn't caused by someone forcing through the skipshift, the car is under warranty. There shouldn't be any question.
