Good morning everyone,

This is just so typical of something that happens to Garry and I really do hope you'll get a bellylaugh ar atleast a good chuckle out of this.

So I'm gone to change the brake pads on the Sentra that started to grind on my trip to Edmonton. Only the inner pads have the sqeeker and it was the outer left pad that was toast.

So to start with I can't open the garage door as last time it thawed water flowed downhill and built up a layer that won't let the doors open. So I have to get down on my hands and knees with a screwdriver and hammer and chip away at about a 2" thick layer 8' wide and maybe 8 inches deep. Get that in, back the car in and get ready to change pads. It happens that dad is at JR's and leaving so when he sees me there he pops in to see if he can help.

Pads get changed and so I go to drive the car out.

As it is icy and I'm not going fast enough the car slides to the left, slides back down hill, hooks the drivers side power mirror on the open left garage door and breaks it!!

Honestly it is funny enough as that is exactly the sort of thing that befalls me whenever I do something mechanical!!!

So now I get to experience what is involved with changing a mirror. And sadly not just the mirror itself broke but the plastic housing against the door so I'm sure it will not be a simple or inexpensive thing to do!!

Oh well, the things that give life color........but just once I'd like something smooth. Sort of gives me Snake Charmer shivvers! At least no code gets thrown by this though!

Cheers,

Garry

LOL Garry, you've not knocked off a mirror b4? you're lucky if not.:D

Funny story. Life gets interesting sometimes doesn't it........

Garry , my friend stay away from the tools

Some days you wonder just what did I wrong to incur the wrath of the gods

I think that the most annoying part is I ended up saving no $ by changing the brake pads myself. I am also expecting that having never dabbled with changing a power side mirror before I will find that it is:

1)expensive
2)difficult to replace
3)impossible to obtain

Good morning,

Still I guess you had to be there, watching the car slide back and sideways slowly and being in a situation where there was nothing I could do to stop it and then the inevitable crack as the mirror assembly bent back, broke and cracked. The lamenting of why didn't I accelerate faster out of the garage to get up the incline, those sorts of stupid things you beat yourself up over after the fact.

I had the thought as well when I was driving to town to get the mail about if the door got damaged at the same time and when I got out to look it appears that only the dirt was scraped in three locations but there doesn't appear to be any dent or stratches. Thank goodness it was an old wooden door and not metal I guess.

Oddly I never mentioned it to my son when I picked him up yet he noticed it on the drive home and asked me what happened to it!

Hopefully today is less exciting and it is nice to not hear any grinding when I apply the brakes so I at least did install them properly. Nothing worse than trying the repair and find out that you didn't get that right on top of things.

Cheers,

Garry

Good morning,

The price of learning a lesson to be more careful - $110 out of the US including shipping. I now have to find out how to remove the old mirror and then to swap out the body color piece on the front of the mirror and then put it back on. I guess it was less expensive than I had been anticipating.

As with most things in life not a overly costly lesson providing that I learn something from the experience..........

Garry

Indeed Gary -- you have been thru tougher experiences. ;)

We've all learned the hard way many times in life I'm sure. You're not alone.

Now that is a posting that I will look forward to reading!!! Sounds like it will be a good laugh after the fact.

OK Wayne now why are you withholding what sounds like to be some real gems??

Just think of all the happy smiles you'll be putting on faces............

Oh Garry, I have to change the brake pads on the front of my truck as they have been squeaking since fall! Now I am nervous, however, I hope to make things easy by doing both the pads and rotors at the same time so I don't have worry about meshing the old with the new.

Good evening Riley,

I actually found them easy, well the 2nd one anyway. The right side I had to re-learn how to change them since it was a couple of years since I did my New Beetle pads. I think the rotors are good. The problem was that the squeeker pad wore less than the non-squeeker pad so the grinding was unanticipated. The piston is nice and free too so I am not sure why they wore so unevenly.

It was a nice way to kill an hour anyway and outside of the broken mirror it would have been a big boost to my mechanical skills and have saved me $ to boot. Alas not in the end but good to brush up on my mechanical skills still.

Cheers,

Garry
