Well.... Trip is getting close. Many thanks to all the CCF members responding with trip suggestions and tips. One last question I have is American gasoline. I use the highest octane I can find in Canada and I avoid ethanol. Are there any tips on buying fuel in the States. Never had any problems last year but heard some rumors that some people have. Any advice is once again much appreciated.

It was our ploy to try to get you to stay Les. :D

Best of luck on the trip! The only hiccups I've had in the States wasn't with the gas but purchasing gas from the pump and having it ask for my Zip Code.
With the Amex, a couple of times it worked to put the numbers in from my postal code and adding two zero's at the end. Otherwise you have to prepay inside.

looking forward to the pics!

Buy a $100 prepaid USA shell card....... then you can pay outside and not have to go in.

Great idea Brian, it is a frustrating experience to buy gas in the US. Never thought of that.

Who said there is no good information on this forum.

:)

I bought one when I was traveling in my Z06 - way less hassles...... except I think it had $2.00 left on it.....

I use Shell and Chevron as much as I can.

Don't think Chevron had a prepay card... no, the guy handed me an application for a charge card.. na.

Mucho gracias to all.... as always, great info... route is mapped... Red Deer/Lethbridge/Flathead Lake/Butte/
Jackson WY/Cody/Billings/Cypress Hills and back to Red Deer. Not saying there may be slight variations and side trips... there usually is... Nope... No Saskatchewan AllFlash. Trying to stay on asphalt.... lol... sorry Riley... couldn't resist that dig opportunity.... In all fairness, our roads leave me grumbling lots too and I expect with our new gov't, that will get worse here as well.... but I stray... thanks again everyone for the input.''' oops... one last ? Anyone know if I buy a Shell prepaid if it is good either side of the border?

Buy it at a USA shell.

Canadian prepaid cards probably won't work. I'm guessing... but probably won't work

I bought one in the USA.

Yes, Allflash, paying too much cause you not sure how much it will take and going back after for change is annoying. You can probably buy this prepaid card with a credit card if you want..... saves using cash as most do when they prepay.

swipe and use and think you can get a printout after to know how much is left on the card. I wrapped that printout around the card and back in my wallet

Brian

Also, if anyone banks at TD here you can set up a free TD USA bank account and get a US debit card.

Now, it does use your Canadian address so might not be good for gas and zip code they ask for but it is great for buying things.

You can transfer USD tot he account in a day for free as long as you are doing it for personal spending, not business.

I have a USA TD account in MD or somewhere in a NE state. it is a USA card, from TD USA think it is called TD North? mainly in NE USA

you just need to keep a min $125.00 account balance for no monthly charges.

It did take about 6-7 weeks to set up as they mail you stuff to sign........ but all fine now.I use it for cash withdrawals and shopping.

just another tip for some.

Brian

and this gas card was 5 years ago I bought..... but think you could buy smaller amounts too...... for when you get closer back to the border

Think i seen $20 and $100 ones.....

Hahahaaha. Too funny.....but seriously, what's wrong with gravel?

Brian, Great tips on going Stateside!

If you want to use a credit card in the US just enter a 0 for the letters. For example if your postal code id M6E1Z2 enter 060102, works 99 percent of the time. A guy in a Shell station gave me the info.
