Is it OK to start in 2nd from a Red light stop?

My 2007 A6 when in sport mode - when I come to a stop it only goes down to 2nd gear which I can easily start off in. If I want 1st gear I have to use the paddles to knock it down to 1st before starting. Is this normal for a Base 2007 Auto?
Doesn't sound normal to me Jim but I'm sure someone with an auto will speak up.
Who makes the A8 in the 2015 Z51? My Challenger uses the ZF 8HP90 A8. I use the manual mode and start in second if I don't want to spin as much on a hard acceleration from a stop.

You need a new C7 Murray... I start of in 7th most of the time when I'm trying to save gas... Of course I am on my third clutch....
