PDI process for ZR1 - looks like you can get the smaller spoiler??
Thankx. I watched the YTV that I posted and I got the distinct impression from the GM ZR1 guy that you can mount the lower OEM wing instead of the large god awful looking one that comes with the ZTK pkg - damn. You use the same install for either, I believe. I understand why you might want the higher wing - race track at high speeds; but, lets face it, 99% of people would never drive the car fast enough to need the high wing anyway. I think it is a marketing ploy to get more money out of you - ie. if you want the performance pkg. (MRC which I like and would want)you have to spend more. I person like myself wants to easily get stuff like golf clubs in the car. It probably makes no sense to order a ZR1 without the ZTK pkg from a resale standpoint - I don't know?Yes you can order the ZR1 with a smaller spoiler and different front aero. However the suspension set up differently for the ZTK package that includes the larger wing and more aggressive front aero.
As far as interchangeable components for the ZR1 aero here is what I have been able to find out.
Here is a quote from a GM bulletin on this as customers were attempting to change out wings.

At my dealership a ZR1 customer was attempting to change wings on his car and GM would not supply any replacement wing other than what was in the original RPO codes for the build.
Here’s what in the ZTK package:

Here is the difference in the rear wings

JMO but for the average (non-track, non 340 kph) drivers, I can't see a lot of harm in interchanging the wings. With 950 pounds of downforce, the high wing obviously has a distinct purpose on the track, but what harm for Mr. Average if he switched to the low wing on a ZTK ZR1? Less downforce and 20% less drag but I still can't see the ass-end breaking loose during sanity controlled, aggressive cornering. Now. If you are driving your car track-like on those rural road corners, all bets are off.
On the same note, installing the high wing on a non-ZTK ZR1 would likely be ok too... additional rear downforce at high speeds... and a not quite as agressive front splitter but really, is the front end going to lift off the ground with this combination short of hitting Mach 1? Will the additional downforce on the non ZTK suspension bottom out the shocks? Guess we won't know until someone actually tries it.
I’m sure it would be no big deal for the average joe Eric but as an engineer you must fully get why GM is against interchanging as they designed for specific uses. Sanctioning people mixing it up could lead to some awefull legal problems for them.
How fast is too fast for a combination of aero? What about head and cross winds?
“Oh darn... I forgot to change the wing and splitter” as the car drifts into the ditch at 270. I’ll just sue GM... if I live.
What do the they say about engineers finally making something “idiot proof”?
Yup as soon as they do... god invents a better idiot.
I think I would get the ZTK package as it has track tweaks done to the suspension along with the aero.
I’m in the camp of “if you are going to drop the $ on the 755 HP track car... do it all the way.”
Nice to have choices in life isn’t it. Pretty sure there is no right and wrong as in the end it’s how it feels to the guy or gal driving it that matters.
