PDI process for ZR1 - looks like you can get the smaller spoiler??

Yes you can order the ZR1 with a smaller spoiler and different front aero. However the suspension set up differently for the ZTK package that includes the larger wing and more aggressive front aero.

As far as interchangeable components for the ZR1 aero here is what I have been able to find out.

Here is a quote from a GM bulletin on this as customers were attempting to change out wings.

At my dealership a ZR1 customer was attempting to change wings on his car and GM would not supply any replacement wing other than what was in the original RPO codes for the build.

Here’s what in the ZTK package:

Thankx. I watched the YTV that I posted and I got the distinct impression from the GM ZR1 guy that you can mount the lower OEM wing instead of the large god awful looking one that comes with the ZTK pkg - damn. You use the same install for either, I believe. I understand why you might want the higher wing - race track at high speeds; but, lets face it, 99% of people would never drive the car fast enough to need the high wing anyway. I think it is a marketing ploy to get more money out of you - ie. if you want the performance pkg. (MRC which I like and would want)you have to spend more. I person like myself wants to easily get stuff like golf clubs in the car. It probably makes no sense to order a ZR1 without the ZTK pkg from a resale standpoint - I don't know?

Yes agreed, the mounting system and support under the rear facia for the 2 wings is identical from what I saw in various articles and vids.

For sure it’s a marketing ploy, but the high wing and suspension tuning is definitely something for the track users and designed as such. I have heard of 2 guys that bought the cars just for the track so it’s there and set up for them. I am personally impressed the ZR1 can come off the truck ready for the track. No aftermarket additions are required. The fellows over at Spring Mountain were very impressed with the ZR1s that arrived while Spence and I were there this spring. We watched while they worked those cars hard and all came back smiling describing a substantial improvement to handling over the Z06s. @SN-III spend lots of time with these guys while I was tearing around in a boring little Z07 Z06 so he has a real good insight on the track performance of the ZR1.

As far as the rest of us Corvette lovers it’s just a matter of personal choice on simply how we want our car to look.
Ya getting groceries and golf clubs in and out with the high wing would be a pain for sure. So the practical side of things come into play there.
You know you having a good day cruising in a C7 ZR1 to the golf course... or the grocery store for that matter. 😂
Not a bad problem to have all in all.

PS: it’s only a matter of time till aftermarket wings are available as well. I’ve already seen some forum discussion on this with vendors and some ads for converting and adding the wing to Z06s and GSs. As GM is against this, It will be a pricey undertaking to buy and install. 😎

Oh man I really like one of those two wings ... :Woot:

I think only one of the ZR1s had a second wing arrive with it.
It was mentioned they may need to demo a swap-out which is
something I never realized might be considered. The White
Low-Wing Vert was there as a "show piece" only.
It arrived on a truck and was not going to be track-prepped (so I was told).
All the others were driven in from across the Country
(or should I say escorted) and by looking at them, there was no arguing.
They all looked much better as they were being detailed & track-prepped.
I wish I had that time all over again man - I have more to ask now.

They were chatting about the two wings and I selfishly
missed much of it while being distracted by the car with a couple others
just like kids in a candy store. I was impressed and appreciative that they
were comfortable chatting while I hung around. Real nice bunch there

JMO but for the average (non-track, non 340 kph) drivers, I can't see a lot of harm in interchanging the wings. With 950 pounds of downforce, the high wing obviously has a distinct purpose on the track, but what harm for Mr. Average if he switched to the low wing on a ZTK ZR1? Less downforce and 20% less drag but I still can't see the ass-end breaking loose during sanity controlled, aggressive cornering. Now. If you are driving your car track-like on those rural road corners, all bets are off.
On the same note, installing the high wing on a non-ZTK ZR1 would likely be ok too... additional rear downforce at high speeds... and a not quite as agressive front splitter but really, is the front end going to lift off the ground with this combination short of hitting Mach 1? Will the additional downforce on the non ZTK suspension bottom out the shocks? Guess we won't know until someone actually tries it.

I’m sure it would be no big deal for the average joe Eric but as an engineer you must fully get why GM is against interchanging as they designed for specific uses. Sanctioning people mixing it up could lead to some awefull legal problems for them.
How fast is too fast for a combination of aero? What about head and cross winds?
“Oh darn... I forgot to change the wing and splitter” as the car drifts into the ditch at 270. I’ll just sue GM... if I live.

What do the they say about engineers finally making something “idiot proof”?
Yup as soon as they do... god invents a better idiot.

I think I would get the ZTK package as it has track tweaks done to the suspension along with the aero.
I’m in the camp of “if you are going to drop the $ on the 755 HP track car... do it all the way.”
Nice to have choices in life isn’t it. Pretty sure there is no right and wrong as in the end it’s how it feels to the guy or gal driving it that matters. 😀

I will admit that the prep of those zr1s was initially for an event with Dealership Salespeople ... and then apparently one yellow one for a segment with Jay Leno ... so the wing tech talk there might likely be ... “so what if I have this one on the lot to sell and someone wants this thingy on the back of it instead?” 🤔

hmmmmmm... Aerodynamics is well beyond the range of my knowledge but I was sure I had qualified my previous response somewhat to avoid the 270 kph, drifting into the ditch scenario whilst intrechanging wings ... Yup..I did.;). GM doesn't have to endorse it anyway Derek. Within a year... or less, (if there isn't already), there will be numerous exact build or custom aftermarket wings available for people to do their own switch. . JMHO. @Darrellg1 could go into business building carbon fibre roof panels and custom wings!
