snowblower auger oil/grease, what to use and where to buy??

After numerous years of snowblower use, probably time for me to do a check of the auger drive and see how the lubricant that's in there is doing. What usually goes in those little auger gearboxes and where would you get the proper stuff to put in there? I have a Craftsman snowblower.

Hi . Not sure how you feel about AI search results but this certainly seems to make sense. I suppose if you knew who manufactured it for Craftsman you could check there .
The lubricant typically used in a snowblower auger gearbox is gear oil, most commonly a 75W-90 or 80W-90 weight gear oil, preferably full synthetic for better performance in cold temperatures. Some manufacturers, like Ariens, recommend their own branded gear lube (such as Ariens L2 gear lube) or equivalent high-quality gear oils classified under AGMA standards (usually AGMA 4 or 5 EP gear oils). There is a choice between using gear oil or grease, depending on the gearbox design — some older or smaller gearboxes use heavy grease instead of oil, but modern snowblower auger gearboxes mostly use gear oil. It's important to use an extreme pressure (EP) rated gear oil to protect the worm gears inside the gearbox. Additionally, if the gearbox contains brass/bronze parts, a GL-4 rated oil is typically preferable to avoid corrosion, rather than the more aggressive GL-5 oils which can harm soft metals.Examples of suitable lubricants include:Ariens L2 gear lube or equivalents75W-90 or 80W-90 full synthetic gear oil (AGMA 4 or 5 EP rated)Lubriplate MAG-1 or similar EP rated greases (used in some cases)When filling, the gearbox should be filled about three-quarters full to avoid pressure buildup that might pop seals during operation. In summary, the standard and safest choice is a high-quality 75W-90 or 80W-90 EP gear oil that is full synthetic if possible, suited for worm gear lubrication in cold conditions, or a high-quality heavy grease if specified by the manufacturer

Foud this Tony .
