Hi all,
I'm asking Santa to bring me a radar detector for Christmas this year.
I'm not very familiar with them and would like to know, do they actually work and if so what type and brand should I be asking for.
Any input would be appreciated.
I just hope now I made Santa's good list

Good question Rick. You will get lots of recommendations on types and makes. They work....but I would caution you. If their radar is turned on, you will pick it up.. if they wit until they see you coming to turn it on, you are hooped. On a busy road, they will turn in on for various vehicles and you will pick up the spray signal. Don't ignore a quick bleep or two.... he may be a mile or two away clocking someone else. I have an older Bell 905 that works great and it's not gonna set you back $1500.00 or more. The jury is out on whether the radar blocker detectors actually work or not. I would spend some time on Google researching reviews on that one.

Thanks for the info Eric, very helpful. I just started looking at them and it's mind boggling just how many detectors are out there. Some are crazy expensive. I will continue my hunt.

Rick after a day of reading forums and looking around I've decided on this one. I like the mirror interface. It has remote sensors front and rear. Needs a professional install but is built in and not obvious and cluttering the dash and power plug. There are lots of high end dash mounted ones out there if thats what you want. Basically you just have to read for an hour and pick the one with the highest price from what I saw.
Eric is right on with the jamming performance. Some swear by it and others say it is ineffective or easily detected resulting in an instant stop and ticket anyway if they pin you. In Canada apparently jammers are legal even in provinces where the detectors are not.

Thanks for the info Derek. I like the idea of built in one, will have to check them out. So you figure the more it cost the better it is. I don't
want to spend too much so l may have to pick the middle price.
I'll definitely have to read up on them especially the jamming type feature. So many to choose from..

I just stumbled on some YouTube vids of these built in systems. Might be a good place to look Rick as they have lots of reviews for every range. Just be careful you are not looking at a review from 5 years ago... like me :banghead:

Have fun

What's the hurry, where's the fire? ;)
I've got a passport and it stays at home in a drawer.
Found out I still remain to be one of the slowest drivers on the highway when I am exceeding the speed limit.
Besides I at least I get a nice portrait of the ass-end of my vehicle with the tickets that I do get.
Damn paparazzi enforcement ...:Rage: (thinking of changing my plate to say "CHEESE")

Here is another option if you do not want the dash mounted unit.
For a built in hidden system with the Dragoneye protection the Escort 9500ci-INTL + ALPriority package does this. However it is pricey. It appear the best in laser jammers is the AL Priority from everything I've seen the last couple days. That's a pretty good Canadian company website Brian. They have tons of packages and options and explain them all really well. Very localized package offerings with local installers too.

Escort 9500ci-INTL + ALPriority Package

This package doesn't have the database for fixed photo radar in Canadian cities but can learn them. It seems I can't find yet a combination that covers everything.
Yay... another way to spend a bunch of money. I do not normally speed but the photo radar really is a cash grab that will get you $75 for 5 KPH over. Soon to be $150 in Edmonton I read recently. Uggg

Just a question about radar detectors. Can they be disabled if you travel? Ontario outlawed them many years ago, signs that the border crossings. Is it just a simple shut off? I thought the police could actually confiscate them just for having one? Maybe not.

Derek, certainly agree on photo radar, just a cash grab nothing to do with safety.

I have an Escort Passport Max and it works fine. It’s saved my butt a few times, But as Eric writes,if your doing well over and he hits you with the “instant on”. Your detector will light up like a Christmas tree. He’ll have you dead bang. Believe me,I’m speaking from experience.

For the most part I think detectors are best used as a reminder you might be going over the limit. Not a thing to be used to go over the limit and think it’s going to save you. To spend the kind of dollars for an installed kit over a dash mounted is kind of a waste in my mind. It’s going to work the same way. My passport offers both front and rear coverage. I’ve seen it as cops have come up from behind and it’s been going off. And jammers? Lol. Yeah ok. Good luck with those. The RCMP have had those figured out years ago. Again, speaking from experience.

That's what I heard too Murray about ON but I doubt that's the case given the amount of out of province and country traffic. I suspect you get a ticket these days.

I've always wanted one for out of province / country travel.

Murray maybe your best bet would be a high end mirror or windshield mounted one that you can simply plug and play for out of province driving. Toss it back in the glovebox when you are driving in Ontario. Makes sense to have one on a long highway trip. (like to Winnipeg :D)

Believe it or not Mike things do get updated and actually do work. There is no way a 10 year old detection system would be viable today agreed. Lots of people demonstrating these different systems. Don't see a bunch of vids saying they do not work. The biggest issue now is the smart cruise control and anti-collision systems in the cars around you that set off a ton of false radar alerts... but there are high end detectors now filtering that out too.I think you get what you pay for from what I've seen.

I realize that this happened years ago but Marilyn Lastman, the wife of Mel Lastman who became the first Mayor of an amalgamated Toronto, originally had the rights to the "Fuzzbuster" line of detectors in Ontario. I remember the police had a promotional bit of catching someone with one and they had the choice ticket or put it under the tire and run it over. A wee bit over the top but this is after all Ontario.
