I live in a rural area. Lots of tradesmen, loggers, heavy equipment operations so the pickup truck is the backbone of the community. The Ford and Chevy dealer lots are stacked with pickups. Other than Subaru there are no sources for rice rockets for the young ones to hot rod so you guessed it they play with pickup trucks. They are everywhere and if you don't drive one people look at you oddly and wonder if you are one of those "citidiots" as the locals love to call people from the big towns.
I have been having issues with the "active handling" on my car and have determined 100%, well maybe, that it could possibly be the "steering wheel position sensor". So I ordered one from one of those online parts dealers, supposed to be genuine GM made in China. I got the shop manual out and looked it over. Some input from my buddy Graham (Nascar03) who reminded me "don't let the air bag blow you out of the car when it all goes wrong." I had visions of some twenty or thirty years from now someone opens the garage to find a dusty old car with boxes, step ladders, garden hoses stacked on it just like all the other garage find pictures you see. Family member says "he took it apart to fix it and it never ran again." "Can't remember why now."
So with that in mind I hung around the local GM dealer yesterday to see if I could talk to one of the mechanics to ask if they have an actual Corvette specialist in the shop. The local dealer has sold a lot of Corvettes in the last year and the hope was they had invested in knowledge to fix our cars. So when I saw a guy backing a new Grand Sport out of the shop I moved in to ask him. He said walk around the back to the first door and talk to Allan. His shirt just said Al and I wondered if they were just trying to cut down on costs by not giving him the Lan but he answered to Allan. I told him what the issue was with the car and he admitted he had never changed on out on a Corvette before. He had a computer beside his tool box and he looked it up to see what was involved. And that is when the mystique of the Corvette got tossed to the curb.
He said "it was exactly like a pickup truck but a whole lot more cramped". So there you have it folks. These exotic beasts are really a GM utility vehicle. Allan was a funny guy. I think I will get him to fix my 1/2 ton when I get the part.
