But what is he always doing with his right hand? This doesn't have one of those "gear shift" thingies that I've read about? Where a driver actually has to take his hand off the steering wheel to change gears? But that would involve driver input and possibly even driver skill. What ever were they thinking then?

I have always felt that the Cosworth Ford engine era was perhaps one of the best. Teams could start from scratch and still build a competitive racer. They knew that they would at least of some parody with the engines. Great stuff.
