Ya , I don’t know a lot about exactly what vehicle came with what from memory but I do recall that there were as you point out aftermarket kits before the factory started widely using them. Certainly made a big difference and probably better gas mileage but that was when there was still lead in gasoline , lol. The environmental protections hadn’t really started yet.
