I was talking to a mechanic friend today. We were talked briefly about the new safety check standards that are being added to the list this summer. According to him, you will only be able to go one tire size from stock and they will be checking rocker panel to ground height as well. All the pro street cars are going to be in trouble as are the jacked 4X4s with their huge tires. This is getting to be insane because there many pages of other stuff in addition to this.

Just reminded me to read the new MTO guide to see if 50% of my cars will ever safety due to improvements ahem.

Wow.... what really is weird Keith is that you have all these weird and not so wonderful rules and checks and balances that frustrate the H3LL out of you but you can still tint your side windows.... we can't tint in Alberta.... not even a light tint.... nada..... sheesh.... and I have this huge sun allergy..... lol.....

I just went to a seminar held by the Ministry about the new safety standards. It's not as bad as what everyone's making out to be. Yes tinted windows have a spec now and shop owners will be faced at buying a tint measuring machine if they still want to do safeties. However, the new safety standard will NOT harm our hobby. If your Vette is lowered for instance, as long as the components are working properly ( no binding, rubbing and still fall within OE camber specs, then you are golden). The kids with the cars that are "stances out" might have a problem, but even cars that have hydraulics and air ride suspension will be fine provided that there is no rubbing, all the lines are free from leaks and in good, SAFE, overall shape. It's not the techs job to take apart components to inspect as this can create more problems. Most of the checks are visible checks unless otherwise stated by the Ministry.

I'll pass this on to my buddy. He is a mechanic but obviously hasn't checked all the fine print. He had the idea that his street rod and anything modified would be dead in the water come safety check time. One thing that most people don't know is that it has NEVER been legal to remove any smog equipment from your car in Ontario. The government is going nuts with regulations no matter what department you look at. A whole bunch more gun regulation stuff coming our way too. It would appear that these government departments don't have enough to do so they sit around thinking up more regulatory measures to justify their jobs. They don't seem to realize that they are dragging the country to a stand still. In our little village alone, in the past three years a car lot, two coffee shops and now a little hobby/toy store have closed. Regulated to death for the most part.

I'm turning 70 in another month and the old body has taken a nose dive in the past year, especially in the energy department. I did my share of fencing when a kid on the farm and I know that I would be pretty useless to you today. The doctors are still doing more tests to see what is going on because it has become ridiculous. I walk one to two miles a day, so it isn't like I sit around all the time. Perhaps I could just supervise. ;)
 
Sorry to hear that Keith.... Sounds like you're active so hope the docs get it figured out.... I'm not a long ways behind you.... 61 this year....

And unfortunately Brenda already has the supervisor position spoken for (and mastered through many years of practice). I have enough trouble with one supervisor let alone two of you.... :Banghead: lol......

I felt the same way initially with the new safety regulations, but after that seminar, I felt a whole lot better. It's more in depth for sure with better standards on fluid leaks, etc. There is going to be new legislation on modified vehicles but not for a few years from now. The Ministry is just trying to get everyone in the field up to speed with this set of standards first, which by the way goes into effect July 1st, 2016.
