I have a 57 vette with Fuel Injection badges, however under the hood it's a 4 barrel carb. Where can I turn to find out this particular car was an original fuelie that was swapped to carb, or if it's an original carb car with the added badges? I contacted GM with the serial number, and they don't have records for cars in Canada dating back that far.

I'm looking for hints of tell-tale signs like certain brackets that I should look for, or other little things that would tell me it's a fuelie or not.

I do not have the answer yet. I found the RPO codes and it appears that there were way more carburated engines in 57. I will do some reasearch and let you know what I find. Is it a single carb under the hood?

for reference:
RPO Description Qty Original $
469A 283ci, 245hp Engine (2x4 carburetor) 2,045 150.65
469C 283ci, 270hp Engine (2x4 carburetor) 1,621 182.95

579A 283ci, 250hp Engine (fuel injection) 182 484.20
579B 283ci, 283hp Engine (fuel injection) 713 484.20
579C 283ci, 250hp Engine (fuel injection) 102 484.20
579E 283ci, 283hp Engine (fuel injection) 43 726.30

I recieved this information from someone else so I cannot guarantee its validity. I do think it is correct though:

The only reliable clue is the suffix on the stamp pad (if the pad is real); fuelies had "EM" and "FK" suffixes for the 250hp, and "EL" for the 283hp. 2x4's had "EH", "FG", and "EG".

All engines are stamped with an engine ID code, consisting of assembly plant code, production date and suffix code. V8 codes are stamped on a pad just forward of the right side (passenger) cylinder head.

This info and much more is available at:

Small Block Chevy Engine Block Identification

We are assuming that the block is original to the car. You will find out if this is true by looking at the engine casting # and the stamp pad.

I will try to help as much as I can.
