Mid Engine Corvette A GO!

Maybe I am missing something, but the C6 and C7 are almost a perfect 50-50 weight distribution, what will be the gain of the rear engine? More weight over the wheels for better traction? Of course if you close the engine bay in the front, you will probably end up with a huge trunk compartement. Also less heat in the cabin... your thoughts?

Car and Driver is now saying the mid engine Corvette is a go. I love it. I love how the rumors of making a mid engine Corvette never die. Should GM actually make it, I think it would be great!

C8 in 2018: The Latest on the Mid-Engine Chevrolet Corvette

My jury isn't quite voting for the "would be great" part Riley. I understand the physics of the mid-engine and know how that relates into distriburion of power, especially in an AWD scenario... and of course the handling improvements..... but... or should I say ....BUT!.... It would be a shame to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the iconic and only American sports car by watching it be replaced by a Ferrari wannabe. Just my thoughts... and I'm sure we will hear from both sides on this...

But... whatever they do....Please don't let it look like the Car and Driver picture representation.... Ugggghhhhhh.

I'm with theboss .....
We already have 50/50 weight so I'm not sure what the gain will be?
I think there may be less storage in a mid-engine version as the front nose will have a radical slope.
Can you have a mid-engine convertible?
I think the only gain may be that a mid-mount design may lead to AWD.
Can you imagine an AWD Corvette..? That I want.

Graham

My thoughts on it being "great" is that it would be cool to see Zora's dream actually come to fruition.

Performance wise, 50/50 is nice a balance but adding a little more rear bias will help traction and making it a mid engine will lower the moment of inertia helping with turning/quick change maneuvers.

Of course, I want it to be a Corvette and not a Ferrari wannabe but I want a Ferrari so if I can get a Corvette and I don't have to get a Ferrari then win-win! :D

With all that said, there is almost nothing like a front engine, rear drive car. I love them. And going mid-engine (actually the current car is damn near mid-engine) really takes away the legacy of the Corvette. I'm not really for a mid-engine Corvette. I'm just more curious to see what Chevy can do with a mid-engine car and if it incorporates awd, that thing will be a monster!!!!

It stated in the article that they'll be going to a 32 valve engine. I wonder if it will still be cam in block or overhead cam like the LT5. I guess with going mid engine, they don't need to keep the height of the engine down.

I am like you guys. I understand the benefits of mid-engine cars for cornering, etc... when it comes to moments of inertia and the other hard physics of it. But turning the Corvette into a mid-engine, high-priced car takes away from the emotional aspects of the Corvette brand. Nothing will say sports car like the outline of a long hood and a short rear deck that an ordinary blue collar worker can hope to one day afford. These high-priced mid-engine cars are way out of the leaque of what most peaple can buy and do not have the heart-pulling emotional aspect at all. If GM wants to build a mid-engine car call it something else but do not call it a Corvette!

I totaly agree :Cheers2:

Where do you put any luggage in a mid engined car. Some of us actually use them for more than doing day trips. I looked at an Audi R8 a couple of years ago and wasn't impressed. It's awfully hard to improve on what GM already has. Friends took they 2008 C6 on a run across Route 66 and all they needed went in the back of their Corvette for the trip. I like the performance AND practicality of the Corvette and don't have to pay through the nose to get it.

Being a huge Zora Duntov fan, I cannot say that I don't want a mid-engine Corvette. He actually built his own C5 mid-engine car, fully engineered by himself and gave his design to GM who threw it away as they already had approved the C5 design. He wanted a mid-engine performance car from GM since the early 60's and never gave up on his dream throughout his whole career.

I will say this - GM trademarked his last name - DUNTOV within the last 8-10 months. I would be ecstatic to see GM make a flagship mid-engine car and call it a DUNTOV, or whatever the general public would receive. At this point, I believe the Corvette name should be reserved for front-engine, RWD layout. Although, I won't be disappointed if GM calls is a Corvette xxxx(insert model name), and still continues to produce the Stingray, Z06, etc in the current design.

Good point Keith. Brenda and I take a week every year and use to run into Wyoming. Now that the dollar is worthless, we will still make the run but it will be probably the Cdn west coast this year.... Back to the point.... I could get my weeks worth of luggage in the glove box.... but the ladies tend to need a bit more space than that.... lol....
