We have a friend who lives in Tucson, AZ. Mary Ann is one of those people who looks at things and sees them different from everyone else, very artistic. She is not really a car person but a lot of the stuff she buys and uses is indeed car related. She bought the hood off a 1960 Chevrolet Apache pickup truck just to get the indented turn signal lights (google the truck model it is unique). She incorporated those signal light housings into the gates on their house. They look like cats eyes and really are very cool.
So she found about this man made product call "Fordite". There is a huge gem show in Tucson that lasts four or five weeks and she found two vendors who sold it, the search was on. Fordite is a rock like material made up from layers of paint overspray from the paint both of a Ford assembly plant (supposedly). It was scraped off walls and machinery before it gummed up the works so to speak. Because of changes in paint both technology this apparently does not happen any more, so there will not be anymore. Why someone saved any of it is beyond me but pleased they did.
Part of the mystery of the photograph is there is nothing to compare the size to. The piece I bought is smaller than a quarter. If you want to buy something special for that signifiant other google Fordite and look at the jewellery that is made from Fordite. I saw many pieces highly polished and made into various forms of jewellery and it is just stunning. Every piece is different. Now the piece I bought was indeed special, experimental paint that was used to paint the last run of Ferrari GTO's in 1963 then shipped state side to paint the first SW coupes. Thus the $22K American price I paid. I would let it go for the same price if someone just really has to have it.
I officially disqualify myself from the MOTM contest for shameless self picture promotion.
