Man I'm pissed, driving my vette from work today, when I spotted a police cruiser comin my way, sure enough lights go on, hand out signaling me to pull over. So he tells me that he clocked me at 124 in a 60 zone. Personally I didn't think I was going that fast. So my vette gets towed away for 7 days, I get two tickets, one for speeding and one for excessive speeding, suspended license for 7 days and got to appear in court in a month. It's not lookin good. I'm lookin at $450 for storage, $150 for reinstating my license, and the officer told me if found guilty, I might be lookin at $2000 fine. What do you guys think my chances are in court, being that I haven't had a ticket in about 3yrs. Think that may help me in court? Anybody with a similar fine and if so what happen, what were the consequences? SUCKS!!!!!

sucks dude.... I'm no lawyer but i've had my past indiscretions regarding traffic problems (knock knock) and I have a sister that's a police officer.

1. The "i don't think I was going that fast" defense has obviously little to no merit it goes without saying.
2. I'd recommend without reservation that you hire either a lawyer or a traffic ticket specialist. They have groups of retired police officers here in alberta that act in your defense against traffic charges and will almost 95% of the time be able to argue your infractions down a great deal and they're not that expensive. Certainly not in comparison to your charges.
3. I would look into the concept of "double jeopardy". I'd pick this as my line of defense to getting the charges substantially dropped. How can you be conceptually guilty of two separate driving offenses if you were only caught speeding once? I know here at least that a police officer can not charge you with 2 separate driving infractions for the same occurrence.

Let us know how it goes... damn dude... there goes your cam... :(

Sure, you were speeding and should pay a fine ... but the new street racing law has gone way overboard. As I see it, you weren't racing anyone. You were just speeding.
The Ontario Liberal Party is just plain nuts.

ok well here's my ode to free speech and I may risk some ruffled feathers but...

Are you serious?? speeding yes... 120+ in a 60 zone??? sorry but that's starting to get pretty dangerous. Next time you're in a residential area, take a look around and pay notice to the intersections and cross walks, side streets coming on to the main drag etc...

Someone in Edmonton got killed a few years back from a car jumping a curb and hitting a pedestrian. Driver was speeding (in around the same factor) and couldn't react so he swerved off the road and mowed down an innocent bystander. Please.. no comments about how great your reflexes are compared to everyone else or how you're a better driver.

The government is there to protect the greater population, not to minimize the fines we pay for the choices we make. Its a free country... you're free to speed and you're also free to pay for the consequences, YES but what about everyone else?

Anyhow... sorry if it seems like a flame but that's just way off base in my opinion.

Well Said. Speed limits are there for a reason even if most people don't agree with them. I'm not gonna claim I haven't sped but I sure don't double the limit. If you knew the penalties and fines amounts before would you have done it? If so then you won't do it again and the system is working. If not then what does it matter if you have to pay the price for it, you knew the consequenses.

:agree:

I've done the same out in the boonies but I always knew how fast I was going.

Laywer up. You can probably get the fine and charges reduced, but you're probably stuck for the suspension, storage fees and license fees

Don't get me wrong... I tried to help the original poster because he seems like a nice guy, is a fellow vette guy and a forum member but I don't dig the whole "the man is out to excessivley punish us" for no good reason routine.

Alright, let's just tone it down a hair. Unfortunately, when you speed, it's always a judgment call. If the road is open, no one around, it's very tempting. Sometimes you get away with it, sometimes you get caught. Rules are made to protect the population as a whole. They have to be enforced all the time as it would be chaotic if they made it so that they only applied when someone could get hurt. The street racing laws were not made because people were obeying the law, they were made out of a reaction to the street racing going on and the accidents, noise, and public endangerment so the street racers did it to themselves.
Don't blame the police or the government, blame the people that made the government and politicians enforce this law.

Sorry prcmauricio, it sucks that you got tangled up in the law and that the law has become what it is, however knowing what the risk is for speeding, sometimes we get caught with the consequence. Just don't blame the system, blame the people that forced the system to turn into what it is.

No offence taken from all the feedback. I understand what the law has come down to due to the careless people, but I also disagree in some cases like mine, I was not street racing. In my opinion street racing is when more than one vehicle is involved, and that wasn't the case here. I was just coming home from a long day at work, listening to some tunes, not endangering anyone in my path. Yes, I should have paid attention to the speed. OK, I can understand the speeding charge, but the street racing charge I don't understand or agree with it.

Brother I am sorry to here of this . You have to be so carefull out there . we all like to feel our cars , but time and place are always two things to keep in mind . A 60 zone is for sure not the place .

Best of luck

Sorry, I didn't see anything about street racing in your original post. It could have been very ugly though as I ran across this tid-bit of info earlier.

See link: http://www.canadiancorvetteforums.com/forums/off-topic/1286-yeeowwza.html

Personally I don't agree with the street racing law if you happen to be speeding by yourself because, well, you're not racing....but it is in the law....maybe so people can't do timed events?

Damn sorry to hear that bud. I have been lucky lately and need to slow my role too before I get one of these tickets!! Its very easy to squeeze the throttle, even just to pass someone and in two seconds your doing 40 over or something ridiculous! I dont even want to ask if your insurance knows about the ticket....

Good point here...

Friend of mine got tagged with a huge number of tickets in a short time... This is what he told me.

Don't buy/sell ANY cars for I think its 6-7 years. Don't call the insurance company for any reason... even an address change.

My friend is on year 4 or 5 and his rates have not changed at all even though he has 0-1 points on his license.
