They have learned a lot in the last 46 years. Everyone is into the game where low eleven second, mild mannered street cars are available from most dealers. Performance went into a nose dive starting in 1971 when GM dropped compression across the board and cancelled most of their hipo engines. Everyone followed suit and everything died. The L98 was a nice start on the road back to performance and every couple of years things just kept getting better with port injection, computer controls then SUPERCHARGING and TURBOS. Now 600 and 700 hp cars are available and they will idle through traffic as nicely as our Olds LSS.

Apparently someone down south in a C7Z06 just hit the 10's bone stock.... Absolutely insane. I never thought I would see factory 500+ hp cars, let alone 600+ and 700+ cars with a warranty!!!!
I wonder how far this will go until insurance companies clamp down on these cars again. Personally, I hope never. :)
I wonder how far this horsepower race will go. Pretty awesome times again!

Even base Corvettes and Camaros have a lot of stuff on them. In the old days, you could actually order a basic car with the big power. Our COPO Chevelle had the 427, M20 Muncie 4 speed, 4.10 posi, PDB, and tach and gauge dash. Not even a radio. All for a list price of $4436.00. Of course, in today's dollars, that would probably be at least $45,000 - $50,000. A person needed a decent paying job back then too if you wanted to play. Nothing has ever been cheap.

My dad always said they should make a bare bones stripper car. The problem now-a-days is that it is actually cheaper for a company to install power windows in all cars rather than develop a manual window crank and have two options. Even wiring harnesses are all the same between the base and top model cars.
I guess the closest thing we have to a stripped out car is the Z28.
