I recently installed an iSimple Connect ISGM655 for phone and audio connectivity on the factory Bose and nav unit in my 2005 C6, so will do a combination of review as well as basic install guide. I didn't like the cost of an aftermarket nav head unit, they don't retain the nav to HUD, and you also need a module for the door, headlight, and DIC chimes adding further complication and cost. I had similar issues with my 2003 Infiniti G35, as the center stack controls are integrated, so rather than dealing with adaptors I opted for a similar Bluetooth/Aux input made by GROM which worked out well. Smash and grab auto theft is high where I live, so I appreciate the stealth of factory look.

The unit will do Bluetooth phone with caller ID info to the head unit. It is compatible with iPhone/iPod and Android for Bluetooth audio streaming, iPhone/iPod control with USB, and will charge Android or other USB device with 2.0A. It has aux input with RCA and 3.5mm. The USB will play mp3 files from a FAT32 partition, I've only tried a USB stick, but I imagine it would work with an external hard drive.

In terms of skill, if you can do basic car repairs, and hook up home audio and video equipment, then you can probably handle this, as with the exception of the XM receiver mod everything is plug and play.

You have to have XM satellite radio in order for the iSimple to access the satellite radio input, so if like me your car doesn't have the option then you have to add it. 2005 cars were all pre wired for satellite radio, however, mine didn't have the option, so I ordered a used XM tuner box part no: 28045272 for $20 USD on Ebay. The XM tuner box mounts behind the carpet of the driver side rear fender in the coupe.
Note: I am not intending to ever use satellite radio, so won't be installing an antenna, however, it should be possible to install the antenna and subscribe to service.

The XM tuners are VIN locked to the car, and require you when installing an OEM tuner box, to take your car to GM and have the tuner coded to your car so it will function, but thankfully there is a hack documented by Ray Kawal here: Adding XM.
Note: that this is not related to an XM subscription, and is strictly a lock associating the XM tuner box to the car. Open up the tuner box and break the leg on the specified chip will unlock the tuner, to make the XM1/2 mode available.
Note: I tested it before breaking the leg in the box, the XM1/2 mode was available, but it said "XM Locked" on the screen when entering the mode.

Remove the center stack trim, then remove the nav head unit and climate control. There are numerous DIY guides on this.
Note : I don't know why the foam pads around the air vents are out of position. The previous owner had an A/C module replaced, which included taking apart the dash from what he told me and what I see on the service invoice, so not sure if the pads just moved over time, or were replaced and not properly installed. I tried moving them but they were quite stuck, and I didn't want to tear them, so just left it for now.

The blue and grey wiring harnesses on the nav unit unplug, and plug into the sub harness for the iSimple.

I don't have pictures of the rest of the install, but everything is plug and play, just plug in the iSimple sub harness to the blue and grey plugs on the Nav and the blue and grey plugs from the car. The Bluetooth mic, USB input, and reset switch all plug into the corresponding ports on the iSimple.

I mounted the USB jack in the cigarette lighter next to the ash tray so I didn't have to drill or cut anything. In addition to playing mp3 files off the USB flash drive, the USB will also charge a phone or other USB devices, so figured it a good trade off for a cigarette lighter, and the power port in the console is still there.

I ran the 3.5mm cable for the aux into the center console for now, but may install a jack later. The aux cable also has a pair of RCA inputs which I tucked behind the dash for later access.

The Bluetooth mic by the rearview mirror. I tried putting it on the A pillar by the Onstar mic but couldn't get it to mount nicely. Apparently you can tap it into the Onstar mic, but I'd like to avoid cutting and splicing for now.

I've only had the unit installed for a couple days so will update with further commentary, but so far things work well. The functionality is certainly not as good as aftermarket, but it's definitely useable, and the quality of phone and audio is great. The Bluetooth streaming quality is excellent, it's hard to tell the difference between Bluetooth and Aux, which has not been my experience with many Bluetooth receivers in car and home audio. The Aux and USB inputs also appear to be pretty clean with low noise floor, at least as low as the rest of the factory stereo, which is definitely the limiting factor. I configure pro audio systems, mixing live audio, along with home and car audio dabbling, and am really interested in clarify, definition, and limiting signal noise, so have somewhat of a discerning ear.

Feel free to reply or PM with any questions.

Ian

Good 'how to' Creedence... Not sure I could bear to take my Vette apart like that though.... But that's just me. I was lost after the word Simple.

Thanks! Simple is relative, and I'd be hesitant if I hadn't taken other cars apart, but there are plenty of FAQs on how to take the dash apart. I also meant that the device itself was simple because there was no wiring wotk. You should see my G35, the whole center stack comes out as one piece including the two center dash vents, and involves removing the screen and clock bezel above the center stack along with the glove box, so with the Corvette, this was just trim removal.

Ian
Thanks! Simple is relative, and I'd be hesitant if I hadn't taken other cars apart, but there are plenty of FAQs on how to take the dash apart. I also meant that the device itself was simple because there was no wiring wotk. You shoukd see my G35, the whole center stack comes out as one piece including the two center dash vents, and involves removing the screen andc clock bezel above the center stackalong with the glove box, so with the Corvette, this was just trim removal.

Thanks for the write up. I’m going to try this as well (recently acquired 08 ZO6)

Thanks Tommy, I think it's the best option if you want to keep things as stock looking as possible and add functionality for a reasonable cost, especially if you have factory nav and want to retain the HUD integration. You may have to look around for an ISGM655 as a number of the US suppliers like Sonic Electronics are out of stock or on back order. I waited a couple months but still haven't seen any stock, so ended up finding one on Ebay from a seller in Canada that was new but open box.
