HP vs Torque

Horsepower and Torque is what is produced when you get in the car, turn the key and press the accelerator. Simple.

Pretty close Murray..... But that's mainly Horsepower.... Torque is what is produced when you shut the car off open the door and pull yourself out of the car.....lol.... :p

My simple and easy answer has always been.... Torque is what helps your vehicle grunt.... Horsepower is what helps your vehicle scream....And then of course there's fear....that's what helps your passenger scream.....

Very good video with a practical explanation. Thanks

This one works too

Horsepower is directly related to torque. Horsepower (as guessed from the name) is power, therefore = work x speed. In this case the "work" is the torque and "speed" is RPM. To get horsepower you take Torque x RPM / 5252. The 5252 is just a constant to get units right. So based on this we case figure that to get more HP we either need more torque or more RPM (or both :)).

In my mind, yes I am an engineer, horsepower is a junk number...Torque is where it is at!
