I have absolutely embraced CarPlay and now
just discovered the benefits for Google Maps
and having a trip with multiple stops ...
Awesome stuff 👌🏻😁

Setting it up a trial multiple-stop business/personal
trip tonight for use in my C7 for tomorrow ...

I had been watch another thread on this matter. One of our members from down East was looking into it, and getting prices, but I haven’t heard anything further. I assumed it was a pricey upgrade.
I installed NavTool in my 15. It gives me CarPlay, Android auto, 4 video inputs and phone mirroring capability.

Guess I need to speak with someone more technically savvy than I am. I have an iPhone and loaded iTunes on a computer once and it took over everything to the point that I couldn't find anything. Deleted it and never let my phone touch my computer any more. Navigation on my 2017 is decent most of the time but still has new data missing. Still a bit afraid of using car play in my car.

As easy as meeting up with my Wife and I and we can easily give you an over-view.
All you need is your phone and a USB wire long enough to connect inside your console box
between the seats (discovered it working best there).

She had CarPlay in her C7 well before I warmed up to it.
Then I noticed the Infotainment map compromises too and had to consider
the fact that she was never complaining about her map as much
as I was. So I invested the time to learn Car Play.
It works best when your phone is plugged in via USB (not wireless to the Corvette).

True, CarPlay is not perfect but I am at least not paying over $150 to get
the latest map information for Infotainment that is already a year obsolete
once installed.

As well ... I am pretty sure that Google maps gives me traffic info ...
which Onstar wants $15 per month for.

Also, I've seen the NavTool that @turbozig setup for his 2015 and
it looks like a sweet upgrade too. I know this 2014&15 upgrade would be much less
than adding Carbon Fibre to the Corvette.

Thanks, I'll reach out to schedule a get together as soon as I get my car back from the USA. Hope to have it home before the end of August. Does it pull data through your car's wifi?

No, it uses data from your phone ... but only if you allow for it in your Phone settings.
It's an investment of time to warm up and learn ... but I assure you that once it's running ...
life is good as long as you are driving with cell phone reception ...

The odd areas like Indigenous Areas are where I revert Maps back to the Infotainment
with a push of one button

So I should be able to run my phone through the car's wifi to avoid roaming charges when I'm 2000 miles from Telus in Alberta. I'll search for an online tutorial and might try it on our trip back to Canada with the car.

Could you please elaborate on what Nav Tool is, and how much that type of thing would cost, etc?
It sounds like a great solution to my FOMO (fear of missing out) issue.

I think OEMs realised they lost the battle to own the in car navi/entertainment space a few years ago when they started adding carplay/android auto. Most are moving to pure Android as the base operating system + apps or QNX (less so) or whatever apple may have.

I think we will see a complete switch to Google/Apple native systems in the next 3-5 years as car manufacturers realise that they have no hands to play in the mobility/connected car space other than enhanced telematics. This means a much more seamless experience where you don't need to plug in your phone to gain the mobility features you use today. Probably a couple of years away with GM, others are ahead in the game, I feel we will see this at the next minor C8 refresh a couple of years down the line.

Navtool is an aftermarket replacement for the on board infotainment system. It lists for about about $800 USD but is sometimes on sale. Navtool highly recommend a professional installer as it is not an easy diy project. For that kind of money and if you really have to have a built in system then ask your GM dealer about an aftermarket GM upgrade which is available from an authorized GM supplier. When I priced it out it was about $1100 CDN installed. The firm as I recall is York Electronics and they have locations in Oshawa and Calgary.
The cheapest and simplest way to get navigation along with other features as someone indicated earlier is to plug your phone into the usb slot in the console box or in my case, the usb slot behind the radio head on my C7. I have an iPhone and have installed on it (1) Apple maps which came with the phone - not bad but not great. (2) Google maps - better but not perfect as some areas are outdated (3) Waze - which is probably the best but has a tendency to keep running and takes a concious effort to close it to avoid unnecessary data usage. With any of these the map shows on the screen in the dash and you get voice directions or you can mute it if you prefer.
As someone said earlier, you don't need the onboard wifi to use these apps thru carplay/android auto, you just need a good size data plan on your phone domestically. If you do a lot of long distance travel to the US say then onboard wifi may be a better choice than a roaming package from your cell provider. But you need to check and compare the cost with your provider.
One of the other benefits to enabling carplay thru the usb cable is you get access to any music you have installed on your phone, which is especially nice if you don't have siriusxm. Saves a lot of time tracking down a decent station to listen to as you travel in and out of range of stations. And of course having the phone plugged in to the usb port ensures that it gets charged.

That does make sense Bob as the roaming can be pricey if you do not get the right plan. I am using my Telus here and roaming is a set rate daily for a maximum of 15 days. I have a data cap but an unlimited offer with a free new phone waiting for me when I get back home eventually. This is far less expensive over a year than the wifi data I bought for the car. I believe GM offers ATT data packages for the car wifi networks and wow...pricey with a time limit or you lose the data.
Also you can pull data from your phone with bluetooth. (music and audiobooks for example. Not sure about NAV) Things like SIRI and maps don't seem to work unless you are plugged in with "CarPlay"
I agree with Nik above that possibly Android may work better on the GM systems as CarPlay with Apple IOS is supposed to put your phone entirely onto the car's system, however, it is sketchy sometime for sure. When it works it works great. The voice commands are really convenient and the Maps app is way better than the NAV in the car.

Ziggy may have the best solution as I am not sure on the upgrade costs on either his or the factory system. I have seen Ziggys going in but have not seen it in action yet. Looking forward to that day.

This turned out to be a great thread. Interesting topic.

My career is New Residential.
My storefronts are my Client (Builders) ShowHomes in Newly Developed Areas.

I had a meeting today at a ShowHome built last year. Used my CarPlayMap Options for Apple Maps and Google Maps.

Apple Maps found the location and Google Maps had no clue as of yet.
It does appear that Apple Maps keeps updated more than Google Maps does.
Which I believe is mentioned in an earlier comment on this thread. 😁👍🏻

I turn on the wifi in the car when we travel. Wife likes to surf the web on her iPad while I drive and find info on places we will pass through. She sometimes uses Apple maps and compares it to the car's navigation system and apple maps seems to be a bit more detailed. On more than one occasion the cars nav map has me travelling across a field when we are on a newly completed road. This was most interesting as we were heading south of Las Vegas on the new Interstate 11 road and bridge across the canyon just down from the Hoover dam. We were Airborn most of the way according to the car nav

Offtopic but for music thoroughly recommend tunein radio, available via android auto also (probably carplay though I don't use an iphone). Free worldwide radio stations, think of it as satellite radio without the BS. Give it a go. Downside is it will chew through data but not as much as you might imagine.

Our 3 drivers (separate vehicles) have a 3Gb shareable data plan per month on 3 phones.
We all use CarPlay when driving for Maps (Music absorbs no data in our case).
We never exceed our monthly use.
Now if someone streams something when roaming ... that would be a quick demise for our data ...
took only one time to learn from that ... so I do not find Maps eating significant data.

As far a music hardware and connectivity resolves ...
I think it would be an excellent new thread topic.
There are so many options for it that and then avoid
making a mess of this Maps discussion

as soon I would anticipate a question for how one can connect a Tandy 8-Track Player.

Fair enough Sp. My comment nuked.
Oh ooo ... Please know I didn't complain to the Mods on anyone here ... :nailbiting:
Just saying music connectivity options would be a good thread perhaps.

I know a few people who have some interesting finds for music from C3 to C7.
