For those folks in Southern Ontario who want to get up north for a fall tour to see the changing colours here is a Suggestion for a scenic fall drive.
For the Muskoka area (Keith Tedford and I did this run a couple of years ago) take Highway 400 north to Highway 11 and continue on to 141 which is north of Bracebridge and just south of Huntsville. This road goes west and you take it to the Town of Rosseau. Great restaurant there called Crossroads along with some nice shops to browse through.
Continue west about a quarter mile (no more) and turn left on the road that goes to Minet/Port Sandfield. If your throttle works make sure your brakes do as well, this is a great road that will test your abilities!
This road ends at Highway 118 and you have a couple of choices now. Turn left and you go to Port Carling and Bracebridge on 118 and eventually back to Highway 11. Turn right and go to Highway 169 and turn left (south). 169 will take you down through Gravenhurst and again Highway 11. Both routes take you past some great picture spots and beautiful lakes.
Another added option is taking Muskoka Road 4 off Highway 118 just east of Bracebridge. Pretty drive with a great leaf canopy. You will end up in Gravenhurst where you can connect with Highway 11 again.
For the Haliburton area you can take Highway 11 to Bracebridge and goes east on Highway 118 towards Haliburton. Alternatively you could go past Bracebridge to Highway 117 and go east to Dorset. Highway 117 ends at Highway 35 where you could go south again. Take a look at the map there are a lot of places to explore in the Haliburton area.
One word of caution is the northern area of Muskoka an Haliburton. I would not go further north than Highway 117 towards the Algonquin Park Highway 60 corridor. Beautiful there but traffic has been a major issue the last couple of years. Three and four hours to go a couple of miles has been the norm. If you are up on a weekday not a problem, weekend find somewhere else to see the spectacular fall colours.
Drive safe and enjoy.
