The dealer where I bought my 2016 Z06 phoned me for a service appointment. While on the phone they told me I needed to have my throttle body cleaned. I was informed they had a special on $50 off. I have had other corvettes and this is the first time this has ever been mentioned. Has any body else done this with so few kilometres on the car.

Hmmmmm.... Did they also offer to flush the headlights out for you? (that was a joke).... Did they mention anything about it possibly helping to clean the intake valves due to the direct injection oil mist deposit cake (I really doubt that too) ? I'd be really certain they knew what the hell they are talking about as there are lubricated moving parts, o-rings, seals... etc. that an abrasive spray cleaner might not agree with. Not sure how a throttle body gets dirty either unless you don't have a clean air filter.... But.... and that's a big but.... I'm not a Corvette specialist and would like to hear more if anyone has an opinion or answer on this.

At the end of the day, preventative maintenacne is great but I don't see anything under maintenance in the owners manual that calls for this....

At 9k? Not even close.

I share Rruuff Day and Niks' posted opinions.... There may come a time at which the throttle body does need a clean, however, at 9K, it seems a bit ridiculous. I would really question the service dept as to what the basis is for their suggestion. And, if their answer has validity, share it with us and then we can say we learned something new :)

Thanks to every one who replied. I plan to ask this service dept for a reason why I should do this. I made the appointment when I was having my XT5 serviced. They called me later about the throttle body. I will post their reason Wednesday afternoon.

Agreed... 9k throttle body cleaning?

My last Z had about 9k on it when I traded it and this was never mentioned to me prior. Bet you $100 they (the dealership) never did that before they sold it a week later.

Yup you are being played.

Very funny. You are the second one to make fun of me.
lol... no one is making fun of you personally Peter. We are just amazed at the nerve of a dealership... or as Jeffer calls them... Stealerships.... And with that, jokes tend to surface..... Don't take offence... nothing is personal ... :Cheers2:

Yes for sure Peter. Everyone here is on your side. Some here are amateur comedians but the information you put out is extremely useful for others who may run into the same challenge with a shop or dealership.
Really makes you wonder what they really think of you when they pull crap like that. You buy the GM signature car and instead of respecting you... they try and bend you over.

I’m pissed off just reading about it.

Anyway don’t be shy about passing some comedy back to these jokers. I’m as guilty as the rest of them. Pretty good bunch here so join on in.

Peter, I echo what Derek and and Eric(Rruff Day) both said. The jokes were directed at the dealership but I can see how you could have taken them the wrong way. There are a few of us amateur comedians "cough clowns cough" on here :) I would also agree that your dealership is taking you for a ride. If there was anything wrong with the throttle body already it should be warranty at worst case.

And Eric was just jealous because his dealership only offered him a 2 for 1 deal on a Can of Downforce™ and after he found out his vette already had enough.

If they use professional BG products to clean TB and inj it is an amazing product ( I use it myself personally - don't run inj stuff through turbos or superchargers ).... but ya 9k is way too soon.

everyone posting was just picking fun of the dealership.... not you I think.

....I think the dealer needs a tuneup, not the car. No secret I'm old school, and when I hear stuff like this it just tells me more that I have no desire to own stuff like that when dealers try be in control of something a guy can't fix himself or has any knowledge about. I thought new cars have a service light or something that comes on, not a phone call from the dealer telling you the car has a problem $$$$$$$.

Tomorrow at 8 am I will make a point to really question this. I will give everybody their answer.

Our 2005 has never had this done in 100K km and still runs fine. Our 1997 Olds LSS has 144K miles on it with no cleaning. I use Shell premium exclusively and haven't even had problems with the throttle body on our old 1987 S-10 truck with over 254K km. Just a scam. They talk to you for a while to gauge how tech savvy you are then try to stick it to you. Beware.

Peter, my goal wasn't to make fun of you but to highlight the fact they offered you this at 9k. My car is 27k and I did check it during winter and it's still clean as new. We normaly start to check throttle body on customers cars at 50k and only on cars doing mostly city driving. The 50$ off is amazing as it will bring the cost to almost 0$, on a model easy to reach like a corvette, it would cost about 60 + taxes for labour and material. If my words where inappropriates, then I am trully sorry, I did not want to hurt anyone.

There's nothing wrong with a quick wipedown of the TB say every 50k. There's usually a bit of gunk and oil due to the PCV crank case ventilation, more for those not running a catch can. It's not mandatory and certainly nothing to worry about if you've never done it.

It's also very easy to DIY this.

I just got back from having my Vette serviced. I go to a dealer out of town because my local dealer could not order a Z06. When I got there this morning I asked why they wanted to service my throttle body. The answer I got was that it was a new girl that made the call. He said that he never recommends this service until 40000 kilometres or if they were having problem. He really could not explain it to me why she called but it was still on my service schedule even though I declined it on the phone. I suspect there are commissions involved. She wanted the commission.

I am glad you got to the bottom of it Peter.
If it were me I would be phoning the service manager and putting in a formal complaint. That kind of attitude from a service department of a dealership is just not acceptable to me on any vehicle never mind a corvette.
