I've read that sulfur in the gas can cause problems by coating the gauge sender unit contacts in the tank. I was in my my local GM dealership and was talking to Les the parts guy that I know very well. I was telling him of the problem and he was aware of it. I bought a bottle of their Fuel System Treatment PN 88861012 It is supposed to be a fuel system conditioner that will get rid of the sulfur deposits. He suggested a bottle full in the gas at each oil change.
They also have a line of washes, cleaners, waxes and detailers for your car. I bought a bottle of their detail spray as I was out, so I can give it a try. I know nothing about the quality of this stuff, just making people aware of it.

It's what I've been using in all my vehicles since last summer. Bought a couple cases from Additson Chev. in Mississauga when it was on sale last summer for about $15 a bottle.

Came highly recommended.

 
Keith and Colin, how is the additive used? Is it put in the tank every once in a while or do you put it in with every fill up. I too have heard that the sulphur in gasoline can indeed cause some serious problems.

Hi Murray, One 591 ml bottle will treat 20 gallons of fuel. Our tanks are about 16 gallons so you could put in just shy of a full bottle. I put in the full bottle figuring a little more strength might be good (with no ill effects they say).

"Pour into nearly empty tank and refill tank.
One treatment will last 5000 kms".

This is how I ended up with this treatment. It was suggested to prevent fuel sending unit issues and to clean the injectors.

they've been dropping the sulpher content in diesel and it can cause wear problems and poor economy due to added friction. i add a tiny bit of synthetic 2 stroke to my diesel fuel. isn't the sulpher being taken out of gasoline as well though ?

Thanks Colin. I wonder in cars that are typically like ours that are not driven on a regular basis if the sulphur problem becomes pronounced. I am thinking that you guys are on to something here at a cost that is not significant.

I had an issue once in my GS -- the fuel gauge (on a full tank) went to zero a couple times prompting me to investigate a solution. Did a little reading up on these issues and came up with this AC Delco formula which is supposed to have a lot of Techron in it.
End result: no more fuel gauge problem........ so I've kept using it. As you say it's not expensive and we really don't do that many miles to worry about the cost.

Yes it could be that stale gas/low miles would aggravate the issues Murray.

I got mine thru a fellow member here: Polar Jet (Rob) ..... fire off a pm and see if he still has it on sale where he works.

It is my understanding that the GM stuff is pretty well the same if not the same as Techron. For all I know, Chevron could be bottling this stuff for GM. I just like to be ahead of problems that may crop up.
 
It is the same as Techron. When I go to the States I grab a few bottles at Wal-Mart, it's around $7-$8, well under the price of the GM dealers. Hope that helps.

I treat all the vehicles with a bottle of Techron spring and fall just for the posted reason .Also good tor clogged arteries ,back arch and gout when mixed with CC :D
 
This form is Great. I am not really a car guy (carpenter buy trade) so when what seems like simple info for some is posted it really is appreciated.

I for one know how the sulphur affects the fuel gauge. My needle drops to E from 1/3 of a tank down to just below a 1/4 when it comes back. It also will show only half a tank when full sometimes. I really do need to use some of this stuff.

However, to get down to the absolute basics, isn't Techron and the GM stuff just Toluene? Is there other stuff in it as well? At work we use it as an electrical contact, board cleaner so it would make sense that it would clean the contacts, plus it boosts octane! As I have an endless supply, I may give some a try this summer in the cars.
 
Gas Tank Fuel Gauge Sender Unit

I was searching on the internet and a guy has a video. His gas gauge quit so he pulled the tank himself. When he got it all apart, the contacts that ride on the rheostat board were not corroded, they were both worn right off to nothing. No amount of anything was going to help them. It is quite a job to get the tank out but is doable and can save you a bundle of money.

The reostat on GM product are knowned to wear out fast, I have cgange a lot of these. Some model you can buy only the reosta some unlucky have to buy the complete unit including the fuel pump :eek:

That would be very expensive should you need to replace the pump.

Seems to be a variance in what is bought for the repair. Would that be because the installer doesn't want to dismantle the mechanism to get to the rheostat and just replaces everything?
