So, I had my new wheels and steering wheel installed yesterday at the dealership where I got the car from. On my way home, I noticed there was a $38 charge for the front plate mount install. I emailed my salesguy asking him why they would charge me for something I thought was part of the delivery. Prior to writing the email I had asked a couple of guy who took delivery of their brand new Z06’s if they were charged for the front plate install. And as you expect, their answer is NO. My salesguy responds with “ let me talk to my boss. How much was it ?” (not going to mention his name) I tell him it’s not the amount I’m upset about, it’s the fact that you are charging me for something that you shouldn’t have. He comes back with I’m sorry there was a miscommunication. The service advisor thought you brought the mount for install. What?! I know, so many questions were running through my head when I read the email first one being do I really look that stupid? Anyway, end of rant. Let me know if I overreacted. I also invited their customer service specialist to join the forums and explain their side more if they want.

The dealership is Leggat Chevrolet on Fairview in Burlington.

Thank you for sharing ... the attempt of the Dealer is absolutely hilarious, your emotion toward it very much empathized.
The reactionary Richter Scale would definitely be sweeping vigorously back-and-forth for me. At the end of the day,
the Corvette would take real good care and taming me down.

You have an excellent story to add to "Our Life in the Millennial Working -Class Age" Mock-u-mentary ...
The oxymoron of "working" and "millennial" is intentional.
I will apologize in advance for painting them all with the same brush (welcome to my generation with that part).

I sure hope you also complained about the $175 charge + shop fees for the 1 hour labor
written up as "New Car Delivery Orientation".

Well, I work in a law firm and there are at least 3 young lawyers looking into getting a vette after seeing my car. Guess what I told them? Stay away from Leggat in Burlington.

Oh and they also installed my steering wheel. This is what the job order said.

The attached photo of the wheel was taken prior to me taking the buttons and wires out because I wanted them to use the new wires and buttons. Does that look like there’s fitment issues with the cover? Unless the buttons on the 2019 are bigger than the previous models, I don’t see a reason for them to mod it.

I told them about it. Let’s see how they explain this one. I left a marking on the wheel so I’ll know if they touch it to add proof 😂

As perhaps in this case, it’s often a marvelous thing in mentoring ...

A response I would be thinking of leaning toward would be ... 🤔
first consider the word "earning" before the word "getting" grasshopper.

Sounds to me like the tech has never changed out a steering wheel before and burned all his flat rate time scratching his head. Only recourse to that would be bull$hitting the work order with a poor fitment to salvage his paycheck....JMO

Yup. They quoted me for 1hr and one of the techs said this is going to take more than 1hr. I probably would have bought it if they said they had a problem with the big torx screw holding the wheel because I’ve heard that that was the hardest part of the install when they put too much locktite from the factory. It’s just hard to believe for the plates thickness to all of a sudden be an issue when it never had it with the buttons it came with.

They could be telling me the truth but they’ll have to prove it in front of me. I have photos of that wheel inside and out and every angle if they want use as reference.

I would hope this would have an easy explanation for what, perhaps, is someone else is not correctly explaining what another had to do.
It appears to be an extra 20 minutes and can only imagine (without building an excuse) that it may be the air bag wheel cover refit as the switches appear to be just fine.
Regardless ... looking forward to the result of debriefing.
The installed work looks absolutely awesome (which I see in your other thread) for the extra $41.70 - just maybe a crazy written explanation.
On an end-of-the-day good side-note, 20 minutes would be .33 hours and therefore $4.63 + gst was not charged.

There must have been a different labor rate for your front plate bracket install @ $38 ... which adds a bit more drama.
Hoping it's an easy and unblemished removal should the front plate be no longer required for you.

As I’ve told my salesguy it’s not the $ that bothers me. My bill was 480+ I’d be happy to give that $38 and the additional time they added to the wheel install to the tech who worked on my car. My issue is when they start bullshitting to get the extra $.

Maybe I’m old fashioned but to me, I wouldn’t risk losing my customers trust over what $80? If I’m not happy with their explanation, I’ll make sure they lose more than that 🙂

I got a new jacket and was informed I get “family prices” on all parts when I bought my last new Z.
The steering wheel thing is a bit puzzling as it seems some may have got and education on your dollar. But the front plate thing is just pathetic. Clearly this dealership considers you as just another sucker to use in meeting some internal up sales game. I would find a different one with a great parts/service department. There are good ones around.
This stuff is sad to see frankly. Not just for the customers of the signature Chevrolet car but for all the poor suckers they hose.

So from your first post do I understand they refunded the $$$ for the front plate bracket install? And go down and inspect what they are claiming about the steering wheel. If they aren’t using anything they will be happy to show you. They gave you a quote based on a basic work scope..it may have changed. Installing an aftermarket steering wheel could have required the mods they said. Sorry, but I’ve been on their side more than once.

Yeah, they said they will refund me because they thought I brought my own front plate mount. I could see that happening if I was buying a used car where the previous owner might have lost their plate mount. As for the steering wheel, the core is a stock gm wheel wrapped in carbon fibre. If the steering wheel came bare without buttons or wires inside, I probably wouldn’t have a problem believing the modification they say they did. BUT, before I bought this wheel I made sure to the vendor that I don’t want any fitment issues and I paid the extra for them to include the buttons to make sure the face place fits perfectly. When I received the wheel, the fitment was perfect but the buttons they used had scratches on them and they looked old. So I popped out the buttons and the wires and decided to swap out the innards when they do the install. Do you think the buttons on my ‘19 are fatter than the buttons the wheel came with? I highly doubt it. If it was in fact thicker I’m sure they would have sanded the thick part and it will be visible. I can compare it to the photos I took when I took the wheel apart.

grandsp69.....mine is going into queenston next week. First time. Alignment, oil / filter. I'll report back.
Good luck! Keep us posted 🙂

Really surprised to hear your problems at Leggat in Burlington. I have dealt with them for several years & find them very fair & cooperative working on my 2014 Z51 Stingray (not purchased from them) & my current 2017 Grand Sport! Have you talked with the Svc Mgr there - Marc Stall? He is a good guy & he’s a “car guy”, even though he likes Mustangs! He is very knowledgeable and he will always take time to listen to your concerns, at least in my case anyway. A good Cust Svc advisor for Corvette is Laurie, easy to get along with & she LISTENS to your concerns.
I would be very interested to hear how your problems get resolved, if they do. I know a couple of others higher up the Leggat chain if you remain dissatisfied.
My Gr Sprt will be coming out of storage soon & it’s first trip will be to the dealership for service.
By the way, I absolutely LOVE that steering wheel you put on! It looks great. I watched a YouTube video on the whole installation procedure for a new wheel & even they said the centre Torx screw holding the original wheel can be difficult due to the way it is put on at the factory.
Best of luck with your new Vette & hopefully I’ll see you around town in the warmer weather (mine is a Blade Silver coupe w/black-red stripe wheels). Cheers!!!

Going back to the original topic of this discussion, $38 (15-20 minutes labour) to install the front license plate holder, a procedure that shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes. Slide the two license bracket retainers onto the license plate bracket, align license plate bracket with two appropriate holes in grill, push ‘screw inserts’ in retainers forward with your fingers, ’NO TOOLS REQUIRED’. There, operation completed, and for this they charged 15-20 minutes? To hear your comment regarding the amount of time spent with the steering wheel, if they attempted to charge you with 15-20 minutes labour to do 3 minutes of work installing the license plate holder, suddenly the additional labour charge for the steering wheel isn’t surprising, I guess.

Two things in closing, thank you for bringing the ‘questionable’ practices of this dealership to our attention, there’s a Pink Floyd song that comes to mind, ‘Run Like Hell’. Also, many years ago I had an issue with a Chev dealership, charged me for a carb adjustment, paid the bill, came back out to my car (still parked in the same place where I had left it that morning) and realized I had forgotten to turn off the alarm switch for my hood. An employee who works there, that I know very well, also confirmed that my car had never moved all day. Won’t go into all the details but after getting the typical line of ‘BS’ from the dealership I contacted GM Canada in Oshawa, I was amazed with their response. Turns out my concerns were a mere ‘tip of the iceberg’.

No, you did not over react. I was not charged anything and they threw in a free hat ( great) and a bottle of silicone (I asked for both) to treat rubber as I have a vert. Quite frankly, I should have grabbed a jacket as well. AS I've found out, they make a lot of money on these cars. You should get a refund and a jacket and hat.

Thanks guys!

I dealt with Laurie for my steering wheel install the wheel install. I love Laurie she was very helpful. I think she was thrown under the bus though by the sales manager trying to blame the plate thing on her saying she didn’t know it was a gm part that should have come when pdi was done. I told them straight up I don’t buy that and way to throw your service adviser under the bus. As for the steering wheel, I told finally explained to my sales guy that the time added for modification was hard to believe and I showed him the photo of the wheel with the buttons installed without fitment issues. His response was “ Yeah I don’t know why they would do that.” Lol PLUS on my way home

I really hope it’s just wheel alignment issue but I have a feeling the wheel wasn’t ligned up properly before tightening the big torx screw in the middle.aaaahh I don’t want you guys to think that I’m a miserable person always complaining because I’m not lol. I’m very happy with the car and so excited I got to drive it today for 3 hours! Haha I also got to meet about a dozen of the guys from the GTA corvette group. Oh Marc did reach out to me through email. I’d like to give them a change to make things right so we’ll see.

Glad you were able to enjoy your new ride today, tomorrow is supposed to be even better!
I’d be surprised if the amount your new wheel is “off centre” was only alignment. Looks too far off for that! Guessing an installation problem unfortunately!! Give them (Leggat) a chance again & speak directly to Marc, nobody else. There is no way you should have gone through all this And I hope they will at least attempt to make things right for you!
Once again, love that black/red beauty & especially that wheel. Here’s hoping they will fix it correctly & get you back on the road. Need pictures of the new wheels too!!
