i was looking at an 03 convertable and someone used a cleaned that looks like it burnt the top. the top looks the same way nylon looks when heated all stringy and bally. does anyone have an idea what/where a new top could be purchased/price and how hard to replace? i found some tops in the us priced about $600 for the top. sound reasonable?

$500-$600 is the usual cost for a replacement top . There are serveral good shops in the US that make replacement tops . The key however is to have a good shop install it . My custom Mercedes twil red top was $600 , the install was $800  ...however the top fits like a glove, even better than OEM .

Here is the link to where I got my top from :

thanks for the info. i can use it a a negotiating tool. now to see if there is a good shop around here for the install.
