Same as an oil change. Some contaminants usually settle to the bottom over time and won't drain out without stirring things up. Getting the engine, transmission or diff warm will whip up any crap sitting on the bottom and you'll have a better chance of draining out things you don't want to leave behind.
 
Make sure you have the anti-slip additive in it. When i did mine i went it was a separate bottle that i had to pour in, but I've seen some manufacturers with it premixed. I stuck with the OEM and used AC Delco brand from the dealer.
