In the Oshawa, Port Perry, Peterborough area, they have been active for 3-4 years checking cars.  Street rods were/are a real target because, well, street rodders use what they have and that usually means an engine with none of the necessary smog equipment.  Pretty obvious if there is no hood.  I haven't heard of anyone around here getting pulled over yet this year.
