Reason for understeer - makes sense to me.

It makes perfect sense. Over steer in a mid-engine car is not the same experience as over steer in an FR layout car.

With FR, they're more of a 50:50 weight distribution, or more weight is up front. This makes over steer more forgiving and easier to control. In a mid-engine car, with more weight in the rear (40:60), when oversteer occurs, it's often more aggressive and happens faster. It's much more difficult to save.

No manufacturer (aside from Porsche in the 60's-70's) wants their cars to be over steering death traps. Very few people can get a car out of oversteer safely without spinning or overcorrecting and, well, spinning. Understeer, what a FWD car does more than anything, is safe because it's easy and predictable to get out of.

It's very easy to get a car to change from over steering to under steering with some simple alignment changes.

Depiction of understeer.
Understeer: the car does not turn enough and leaves the road
Depiction of oversteer.
Oversteer: the car turns more sharply than intended and could get into a spin
