Has anybody had any major issues with the 6 speed auto? A guy at work has an 05 with a 4 speed auto and he has had it at the drag strip several times and never had a problem. He has a few performance mods and nearly 90,000 kms on his car. Just wondering about other peoples experiences.

There has been no issues documented with the 6 speed automatic on this or the American Corvette forum.
I own one, and often do spirited shifting with the paddles, and no issues with my 06 auto.
The paddles can also be tuned to shift quicker ala quick shift type kits of the 60's and 70's.
Hope this helps.

No issues here either and none I've read about.

I've fitted an external cooler (actually Manny did:D) for a little insurance and will change the fluid probably ahead of schedule for even more insurance.

Guys ! Seriously! There are many issues with these trannys on high HP builds. I burnt the 4,5,6 clutches on mine and just rebuilt it with a few upgrades. The concensus seems to be that under 600hp they hold up well as long as the tune is right. Over that problems can start to arise.

I stand by what I said. I've not heard of any issues in my crowd and with my style of driving.
I don't race, tho I am fussy about maintenance.

You don't need to baby it jsut make sure you get maintenance done. If you're worried about it then get the tranny flushed and fluid changed and install a cooler.

As Canuk says if you're in the higher hp range and race then that changes things.

I got the impression that the op was asking how mods and drag strip use effected things. The A4 is much stronger under those conditions. Vettes tend to be older drivers and less use than average. If you look to the camaros and G8's, you see many more issues with the 6L80.
That said, on a stock, or near stock car the trans should not give any problems.

I have a 2800 stall with a 3.42 gear in my 08 A6 and it has been problem free so far. While I don't race or take it to the track, I've got a heavy foot and always use the paddles. We'll see what the ECS kit that is being currently installed will do to it. Hopefully keeping the power below 600rwhp and not tracking it will ensure some longevity.

I am curious, is using the paddles on the newer automatic cars any different than just changing the the gears on the 2002 Auto Transmission? When I bought my car I really was looking for a standard but the deal was just too good to just walk away. I haven't changed the fluid yet, she only has 24k's but I have thought about a tranny cooler.

Thanks for your replies guys. I dont intend to put a car on the drag strip or do too many performance mods (what IS too many?). I have heard of a couple of issues with manual transmisions (grinding due to bent shift forks etc.) but none about autos so I was curious. Happy to hear they seem trouble free for the type of motoring I intend to do.

The 6 speed autos are tough. I had a 4L80E in my Camaro SS with over 200, 000km that was modded and I took to the track. I've seen some 4L80E's get swapped for the 6 speed. The die hard guys will either use a Turbo 400 or Powerglide. You should have no issues with your trans.

Any of the problems that I have seen on the internet regarding clutches, transmissions and rearends were all on the drag strip with slicks and big hp. At the strip you will soon learn what else you should have upgraded. Stock vehicles are probably not going to have many reliability issues. I'm certainly not losing any sleep.
