Just tossing the idea around for a cruise for us Calgary/Airdrie/Cochrane Guys/gals who won’t be attending the 2019 Caravan on the 21st of August. Of course anyone else who might be in Calgary before the caravan send off would be welcome to attend if you chose too.

Nothing big like the recent mountain cruise mind you but just an early morning meet at a couple of different locations we can agree on and 45 mins west brings us to highway 40 with the destination either being the upper Kananaskis lake parking lot or the Highwood pass lot. I also know of a couple of good spots for group photos if that idea comes up.

There’s also the option of carrying on over Highwood pass to Longview. That’s the highest paved road in Canada so there is a little significance to visiting there.

On the return drive,we’d have the option of the all you can eat prime rib/lobster buffet at the Stoney Nakoda resort. There’s also the new Bearspaw travel centre there that might be worth a look at. That place was a long time coming and it’s supposed to be pretty nice.

I got 2 meet up spots picked out on the west side of the city that have a Timmy’s and the other a Starbucks and McDonald’s. As well there’s a Petro Canada station and a Shell station right there so I’m kinda leaning towards that for the starting point.

I’m going to run this by the guys who will be at tonight’s Shag cruisers meeting. Please feel free to add any ideas/thoughts/suggestions.

These are the 2 spots I’ve got picked to meet and get organized/coffee and start from. The Timmy’s is about 3 kms east of of the other location with the Mickey Ds,Starbucks and both Shell and Petro Canada stations. The X across from Timmy’s is a big parking lot for the batting cages and sports fields.

Just back from the GM cruisers meeting after my sales pitch. It’s going over well so far and 10 have said yes. Corvettes,Camaros and a Mustang so far.

August’s meeting will be moved from the 14th to the 7th to lay out the final draft. It’ll more than likely be a drive southbound on 40 to the Highwood pass parking lot. (Approx 80 kms from the Hwy 1 junction and casino) And then hang out there or the upper lake for what will no doubt turn into an impromptu show/shine with all the tourists and hikers there on a Saturday. I’ll be loading up my cubby with Hot Wheels. From there it’s back north to the buffet for 5 pm and a good feast.

I’m going to see if we can get some pics with the Helicopter company who operates a scenic flights operation out of the east side of the casino parking lot. I have some rotor head buddies who might be able to get a few cars onto their pad.

Shaping up to be a decent,no pressure,no expectations day.

What... no T-shirts? 😂

I like the itinerary and this day cruise being open to make the day whatever it becomes.
Definitely has my interest as I know many who have been watching your videos in the past are waiting for an opportunity like this.
I will be back in YYC from westfest too and it’s just before heading north to YEG.
This has Great timing for my Corvette Summer 👍🏻

I love food and that feast at Nakoda sounds good too. I’m curious what’s the talk about videos? Any how if I can squeeze it in before leaving on the Kentucky Caravan then count us in. I take it spouses are welcome? The Highwood pass and Longview are fun too. I love that country you feel a million miles away from the prairies! Save the Wave! Haha

What I mean by videos Jim is I’d probably get some walk around video at the stops and post them for the rest of the forum. Particularly the Upper Lake lot if we choose to stop there.

Lots of time before the next cruisers meeting August 7. I’m going to talk to Wayne later today about the route. Ive got 2 options in mind and again will put that up for comments.

Again Jim,cruise day will be August 17 so that’s a few days before your Kentucky departure. And of course your wife would be welcome.

Here’s the route I have mapped out for us.

It has a little bit of everything. I hope you guys like it and that you might consider it in your August plans. Again, everyone is welcome. Wives most certainly as well as kids. I would love to see some of you Edmonton/Red Deer guys make the trek but won’t be PM’ng anyone. The offer is out there and it’s the best I can come up with with minimum planning. It would be nice. Anyway,,,here’s my idea for August 17. This is beginning at the McDonald’s at Bowfort road NW. I think this is the best starting point.

Nice highway cruising from marker A to B.
B to C is through the Morley reserve.
C to D is mostly twists and turns on the 1A. A very enjoyable piece of road.
Between D and E is where this pic was taken with Mt Yamnuska behind.

E to F is highway 1 again to highway 40. The Stoney Nakoda casino is at this junction. I figure we’ll stop at the new travel centre for windshield cleaning/restroom break/stretching.
F to G is highway 40 to Highwood pass.

Once we stop at the travel centre,I’ll offer up a couple of stops on 40 we can consider. I did call Tim Hortons today and am waiting for a reply back from a young lady who is involved with the ranch in some capacity. More on this soon I hope.

It’s approx 80 kms from highway 1 to Highwood Pass one way so we’ll probably have ample time for parking at Highwood pass or if it’s too full,we can go a little further south to Mt Lipsett day use area for pictures.

On our return trip,we can take a detour into Peter Lougheed provincial park to the upper Kananaskis lake for a bit. Once leaving there,we can stop at Mt Allan/Nakiska,site of the alpine skiing events of the 88 winter games.Lots to be seen if we choose to stop. I’ve been driving this road since the early 80s and would really be happy to share some beautiful places I know of here.

The buffet doesn’t start until 5 so I’m guessing that we’d be arriving back there before then so again, line the cars up on the east side of the lot by the helicopter pad and entertain the people that come and go through there. Some of you might play casino games and can venture off into there if you want.

Thanks for your interest Pep. It would be great to have you come along.

As of now a departure time is being discussed with Wayne from Shag. We’re leaning towards a 9:00/9:30 departure from the Bowfort road location. We have a meeting August 7 and final details will be posted when I return from that.

Sounds like a great trip. Looking forward to it. 👍

Would you go down the night before and hotel it or head out early morning Derek?

FYI Mikey, If we make the day, we would most likely not do the double back part as my sister in law lives in South Calgary and we would head through Longview and back into Calgary from the South and visit and spend the evening with her.

Good question... I will have a friend from Brazil with me so likely it will be an early morning shoot from YEG to YYC to meet up with the gang for the launch.
My friend is very excited to see the Rocky Mountains and ride in a Corvette. He’s a great guy and speaks better English than me. 😂
