that reminds me of the very early car cassette decks. i had one in my 71 demon. it didn't like cold weather, many times i ended up with 3 or 4 feet of tape strung all over the place. we used to record from albums with a portable recorder. i was and still am a big doors fan so i put them on cassettes along with zeppelin and the who etc. the sound wasn't great but neither were those old am radios. having my own recorded stuff was popular with the gals too  those decks made a brief appearance and then the 8 tracks took over but after a few years the cassettes came back big time, and much better.
