So the other day the battery light came on and after checking under the hood notice the cable that runs from the back of the alternator charging the battery had melted through. after resetting with a new connector and making sure that it was Secure and running it again I noticed that I could smell burning electric parts and upon shutting off the engine smoke was coming from the back of the alternator. Does anyone have any issues like this or run into this problem before it's a new alternator just bought it in June and installed it and it ran fine up until this week

then there is a short to ground in the alt . take the battery cable off at the battery before something fries , and there should be warranty on the alt so take it back.

I agree, Short in alternator..bad internal regulator...

By all means. Disconnect the battery.
Is that a recent alternator addition?
Good luck.

I would also double check your wiring from the alternator and check the battery to make sure that it wasn't a near short (or arcing) to the chassis somewhere drawing a huge load, just to be on the safe side.
