I have a new to me 2017 base Stingray with 45,000km on the dial.
How big a problem, really, is the AFM system to the top end of the engine itself. I have read it is a common issue. Is it a guaranteed problem down the road? I have the OBDll plug in to shut the system down, but worry it may cause other issues in the future. I have read that in Sport mode it will de-activate the AFM but mine doesn't seem to do so. Is there a better way to reduce the possibility of engine issues down the road. Highway fuel mileage is amazing when its active, but is there going to be a huge cost at a latter date. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Millions of Engines have gone hundreds of thousands of miles without AFM. Leave the OBDII plug in place and don't worry about it. Use your foot to get good highway mileage.

First, welcome to the forum. It is the best place to learn about your 2017 Corvette. Is your Stingray an A8 or the M7?

I used the Range OBDII device in a 2017 and 2019 Vette and still use it in my 2024 Camaro with the LT1. There is no need for AFM other than to help satisfy fuel consumption regulations in a very small way.

I did some calculations with the 2019 GS and there was not a significant savings with AFM active. To be perfectly frank, we do not buy a Corvette to save money on fuel. V8 all the way.

2017 A7 and I agree. I was just unsure as to whether or not it would cause additional issues. I am just finishing an 1100 km trip and mileage is still mid to high 8's. My latest fill showed 844ks to empty. I'm not heavy footed but don't baby it either, so extremely impressed. Thanks for the response

I had read about when the AFM is active when we first bought our 2014 in May of 2017. From my recollection it was always active in the automatics. What I recently discovered is the AFM does not seem to kick in when I have it in Sport mode with Manual shifting. I am not trying to refute any previous statements, and I have no idea if the previous owner may have had it tuned. That’s my experience, with our car.

I think it will if you get to a steady highway speed in sport mode but in Z- mode with manual it will never go into 4 cylinder mode . I find manual Z-mode better than auto Z as it's not as aggressive holding gears/rpm . It's my go to for a while now. And of course track mode is all hands on deck and no 4 cylinder but not practical for daily obviously. Give Z manual a try if you haven't already. And a warm welcome to CCF !

Thank you. The C7 does not have a Z-mode. I can say without a doubt 4-cylinder mode is not kicking in when it is in Sport mode with manual shifting. This is through watching the DIC with Cylinder activation selected and just listening carefully with the window open and not much ambient noise. It makes a distinctive yet very quiet “ch ch ch ch ch” when cylinder are deactivating. Maybe mine was tuned to deactivate in this condition before it was purchased.

Sorry. My mistake not noticing your model year ,lol. But at least the info should come in handy if you trade for a C8 . So you don't get an icon on the display when it goes into 4cy mode.......That feature is kind of handy in the C8 . Just a thought but I suppose you took a look in the owners manual. Sorry again for my confusion.
