RIP
We travelled from Tucson to Bisbe Arizona on a day trip. The route took us along Interstate 10 past a town called Benson. Interesting sight there.
Union Pacific Railroad has stored over 1400 locomotives, roughly 16% of their fleet on a siding there. By the highway the line goes on for over 2.5 miles but the spur they are stored on is a huge "S" shape so no idea how long the line actually is.
UP says they are idle because of a turn down in the commodity sector, energy recession and many other factors. I have also heard it is an emissions issue but that may not be correct.
It was an incredible sight to see. The locomotives are guarded round the clock by some serious looking people. Huge investment just sitting in the middle of the desert. Fought off rattlesnakes and wild piggies to get these shots, dangerous business trespassing on someone else's property.

When we were headed back to the Airport the Amtrak Sunset Limited flew by, no idea how fast it was going but it disappeared in a big hurry.
