all new to the vet world just got a red 74 coupe couple of days ago 4 speed, have a few questions as i have never owned a vet before, car has all options except air con.

1 air vents anyway to have fan on without so much engine heat coming out of them.

2 beside the vent that blow torwards your face are 2 black nobs on each vent, anyone know what they suppose to do.

3 i wanted to buy a new battery for it, whats are you guys putting in as far as brand and power wise on batteries ?

4 anyone know what that key pad on the right fender outside the car is for ?

im sure i'll have way more questions about the car, as i plan on fixing the bad ove the next few years.

Welcome to the world of C3 vettes.

1. Get used to the heat. C3's tend to be a bit hot inside, especially around the feet.

2. The black pull knob opens and closes the vents in the lower corner of the dash.

3. I just have a Canadian Tire battery in mine. Not sure what the CCA rating is.

4. The lock cylinder on the fender sets the alarm. Clockwise to set it, counterclockwise to disarm it. And no, it doesn't lock the hood as I've been asked a million times.

Thanks for the info.
Another question I have is is there a special way to turn or pull the headlight switch. On my dash it says bright and noticed all 4 head lights are on I guess with 2 being the high beams. I played with the switch but the high beams ate always on

The high beam switch is on the floor. You should see a little rectangular pad on the carpet at the far left of the driver's footwell. Just push the pad with your foot to toggle between high and low beams. In 1977, they moved this to the signal lever.

Hey, no worries, there are no stupid questions. Keep asking. That's how we learn!

as far as the alarm goes anyone know the details on what it actually suppose to do, does it have a siren when you arm it and then open the doors ? i havent tried it but i will soon to see what it actually does

There is a horn in/under the rear of the car kinda on the drivers side. There is a flasher and relay in the jack storage compartment behind the passenger seat (you have to lift out the black pressboard liner to get at the jack compartment) that flashes the lights. There is a switch on each door on the lock jamb (this switch also illuminates the door ajar light on the instrument panel) and also a switch under the hood near the wiper motor.

anyone know what a good manual for diy repairs for c3, i know canadian tire used to have the haynes, anyone know a good make of book to buy ?

Check out the Corvette Central website. Lots of books and manuals on there. Be sure to get y0urself an owner's manual...it helps to understand the car better. I have the Assembly Manual for mine as well...helps to understand how the car was assembled.

You can also google service manuals for your car and maybe find one someone has used.

I am really enjoying this thread and hearing the questions you are asking. That's awesome to see someone wanting to learn more about their car and getting help. You members are the best!!!!

Let us know if the alarm works! I've hear way too many times that they say their alarm doesn't work.

Well I bought the assembly manual but I'm after probably a Hanes manual from ct. Not sure about the alarm haven't tried it as the car is at stingray auto getting some repairs done to the parking brake and a few small leaks. Also the frame is a bit rusted on the back drivers side do that needs repair. Once I have it certified I'll start doing small things to it. Prob first project is a new carpet set

Yeah, my alarm doesn't work either. Did some checking and found someone had cut the wires going to the key switch on the driver's side...probably many years ago.

Glad to hear it's coming along. It starts with new carpets...and goes on from there. :)

well doing some repairs to the vett today found broken wire leading to the cigarete lighter fixed now works also put a new battery in it, wow the battery gage actually works now, the old battery was 12 years old, also the alarm does work well, after i jumpered the swich wires, so swich is bad and broken, next will be trying to replace the radio and speakers, seems like you have to take out everything for the dash and gage bezel to come out, another project for another day ,

Replacing the speakers is an all day job as your correct, you have to take out the center bezel and both sides of the dash, drop the steering column, and take the dash pad out. And to take the dash pad out you need to remove all the trim around the windshield. The alarm switch is the same part number as the headlight warning limit switches on each headlight bucket. I just replaced my headlight warning switches in mine this week. Now my warning light goes out when the lights are up rather than glaring at me at night. The switches were 23.95 each on Corvette Central.

Yes just ordered the switch I also took out the windshield trim on the out side and inside as i has water leaking in when driving the wind pushes the water up the windshield then a bit in the car so I resealed it with silicone than put the trim over it. Also taking the upper trim on the inside there was a bit of rust so I just sprayed lots of krown rust spray all along the top so rust doesn't spread along but there wasn't much rust
Something you might consider doing as the old seal gets cracked and worn out right on the top of the windshield
